Insurgents develop deadly new bombs
Insurgents in Iraq have reached a new level of military sophistication by developing a bomb which penetrates heavily armoured vehicles, US commanders have admitted.

Recent roadside bombs have used a "shaped" charge which concentrates the blast, devastating some of the most heavily protected Humvees.

Insurgents have also developed a way to detonate bombs with infrared lasers rather than mobile phones, which can be jammed.

The refinements have fuelled a surge in US casualties, with roadside bombs alone responsible for at least 68 deaths since May, the highest toll over a two-month period since the guerrilla war began two years ago.

8. Think armored hummers, and possibly tanks.
Previous bombs were mostly effective against the unarmored hummers and transport trucks that formed the bulk of the vehicle contingent over there.

12. I have heard that the shaped charges
have been very effective against tanks.

I also heard that the gov't intentionally under report tank attacks. Not good for moral, don't you know.

7. Shaped charges are nothing new.
We used them back in the 70's when I was in the Navy. They probably go back further, most likely to WWI or WWII.

9. Shaped charges were first used in war in 1940
But of course, to the MSM this is 'new'.

Heck, it's not even new to terrorists! Ref: the assasination of Herrhauseen (Deutsch Bank chairman) in 1989. The "new explosive" consisted of TNT, a sheet of copper, and a bicycle.

10. We and the Brits trained them
During the soviet-Afghan conflict, insurgents were trained to make improvised self-forging anti-tank mines that were very effective against Soviet MBT's, so a humvee is a creampuff in comparison.
It's like Pandora's Box, once you teach them how, everyone finds out how to do it.
