Former Alabama chief justice says freedom of religion is undermined

NASHVILLE, TENN. - The former Alabama state supreme court chief justice who lost his office after refusing to remove a monument to the Ten Commandments urged Southern Baptist pastors Monday to reject a "judicial tyranny" that refuses to acknowledge God in public life.

Former Chief Justice Roy Moore, speaking to the Southern Baptist Pastors Conference, blasted U.S. court decisions that he said undermined freedom of religion. "We have been deceived by a government which tells us we cannot worship God, contradictory to history, contradictory to law, contradictory to logic," Moore said.

Moore was removed from his post in 2003 after being found guilty of defying a U.S. federal district court order banning a monument to the Ten Commandments in the state courthouse. The monument is on exhibit at the Gaylord Entertainment Center where the Southern Baptist Convention opens its two-day annual meeting today.

He said his removal was a necessary sacrifice to illustrate the "judicial tyranny" that he said is sweeping the nation.

1. He doesn't want me to acknowledge my God (or idea of God) ..
Roy Moore wants me to be compelled to acknowledge his version.

8. Unfortunately, there are more than a few screwballs
In Alabama and elsewhere, who take what this theocratic nut has to say as pure gospel.

...sigh...

That sound you hear in the distance is Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, and Paine puking in their graves.

9. True... but...
Moore has said that he seriously considering running for Governor here in Alabama... and polls show that voters favor our openly pro-choice and Kerry supporting Democratic Lt. Governor Lucy Baxley.

Good news for Alabama.

10. The Republican hate machine hasn't turned its attention
to Lucy yet.

They are still focused on defeating Bob Riley in the primary.

But just wait. Before they are through, they will have half the state believing Lucy is a lesbian satanist who once dated Ted Kennedy.

4. WTF?
"We have been deceived by a government which tells us we cannot worship God, contradictory to history, contradictory to law, contradictory to logic"

Listen up, jackass ... NO ONE ever said that you can't worship God! What you can't do is impose your God or your religious beliefs on other people using government and law! WHAT PART OF THAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?!? :grr:

5. Judicial tyranny is what got Roy removed
The fact that he was practicing it.

Notwithstanding the establishment clause and separation of church and state, Roy thought his position as a Chief Justice entitled him to flout the law and make a court building into a religious shrine.

7. Well, Moore is just plain anti-American.
What he calls 'tyranny' is what the Founding Fathers called 'checks and balances'. If he wants to drag God into the courtroom let him move to Iran cause God religious leaders ARE the courts there.
