New US ambassador vows to crush Iraq's insurgency
28 minutes ago

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The new US ambassador to Iraq pledged to work with Iraqis to crush the ruthless insurgency that is throttling much of the country despite US-led offensives against the rebels.

"I will work with Iraqis to break the back of the insurgency," said Zalmay Khalilzad, who presented his credentials to President Jalal Talabani on the way to Brussels for an international conference on rebuilding Iraq.

"Foreign terrorists and hardline Baathists want Iraq to be in a civil war," Khalilzad told reporters Tuesday, referring to members of former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein's Baath Party.

"Foreign terrorists are using Iraqis as cannon fodder."

Insurgents believed to be led by Sunni Arabs and Jordanian-born extremist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi kill scores of Iraqis almost daily, targeting members of the country's security forces in particular.

1. Why is the Conference on rebuilding Iraq being held in Brussels,
Mr.Ambassador? And exactly how many Iraqis are attending the Conference?

Your statement ranks up there with Bremer's who, upon landing in Baghdad said "All foreign forces must leave Iraq immediately" with not a trace of irony in his voice.

If you people did not have so much power of life and death over others, you will be dismissed as clowns.

3. Zalmay Khalilzad's specialty is fomenting terrorism...
would the chimp have picked him otherwise? The USA needs the violence in order to justify staying in Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran (soon)....

http://emperors-clothes.com/archive/khalilzad-facts.htm

Dr. Khalilzad? Would that be the same Zalmay Khalilzad who oversaw the mobilization, leadership, funding and coordination of, and the media support for, the Islamic fundamentalist terrorists who devastated Afghanistan and Bosnia?

That's the man.

Dr. Khalilzad is in charge of a large part of Asia and the Middle East for the National Security Council. He has *two* field positions: special U.S. envoy to Afghanistan *and* special U.S. envoy to the Iraqi opposition. <1>

Why those two? Afghanistan and Iraq aren't even in the same region. They are separated by 1424 miles, Baghdad to Kabul. <2>

Those miles have a name. It's Iran. Could that be a clue?

Describing Zalmay Khalilzad as an 'envoy' charmingly understates his power. For example, he is the one who chose Hamid Karzai to head the current Afghan government, after which Khalilzad's choice was 'democratically approved' by the members of the Afghan elite, whom he had assembled. <3>

17. Khalilzad also is a signatory to PNAC's 1998 letter to Clinton
...urging him to take military action against Iraq.

http://www.newamericancentury.org/iraqclintonletter.htm

This is the lowdown on Khalilzad from Cooperative Research (more at this link):

Zalmay Khalilzad is appointed Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Gulf, Southwest Asia and Other Regional Issues on the National Security Council. Khalilzad was an official in the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations. During the Clinton years, he worked for Unocal. After 9/11, he will be appointed as special envoy to Afghanistan. He previously worked under Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and helped him write a controversial 1992 plan for US world domination.(see March 8, 1992) He was a member of the neoconservative think tank Project for the New American Century. The Asia Times notes, “It was Khalilzad - when he was a huge Taliban fan - who conducted the risk analysis for Unocal (Union Oil Company of California) for the infamous proposed $2 billion, 1,500 kilometer-long Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan gas pipeline.” After 9/11, he will be appointed as special envoy to Afghanistan and become what some call the "real president" of that country (see January 1, 2002).

Real piece of work; just the kind of thug Bush** likes to put in charge of things.

22. Convicted criminal. Elliott Abrams...
Emblematic of Abrams’ visceral right-wing politics was his statement following the murder
of John Lennon in December 1980. Setting the tone for the cultural and political backlash
that would soon dominate U.S. politics, Abrams complained publicly about all the media
attention given the famous singer: "I’m sorry, but John Lennon was not that important a
figure in our times"Why is his death getting more attention than Elvis Presley’s?
Because Lennon is perceived as a left-wing figure politically, anti-establishment, a man of
social conscience with concern for the poor. And, therefore, he is being made into a great
figure. Too much has been made of his life. It does not deserve a full day’s television and
radio coverage. I’m sick of it."

23. There were no ties between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda.
Never forget....

When Kristen Breitweiser, Patty Casazza, Lorie Van Auken,
and Mindy Kleinberg, widows of men killed in the attacks on
the World Trade Center, started doing research and
demanding answers from elected representatives, they gave
rise to the 9/11 Commission. Nicknamed the Jersey Girls, they
became experts on national security and terrorism. A year
after the towers collapsed, one of them spoke forcefully to
Congress about what had really happened. A year and a half after that, the 9/11
Commission issued the official verdict that there were no ties between Saddam
Hussein and Al Qaeda. By that time, the Jersey Girls were campaigning against Bush's
re-election.

27. Envoy: Iraqi Militants Aim for Civil War
BAGHDAD, Iraq - America's new ambassador to Iraq expressed horror Tuesday at the violence wracking the country and said Islamic extremists and Saddam Hussein loyalists are trying to start a civil war.

U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who arrived from Afghanistan, said militants are using Iraqis as "cannon fodder" in a quest to dominate the Islamic world.

"I will work with Iraqis and others to break the back of the insurgency," Khalilzad promised on a day that saw more than a dozen gunmen launch an assault on a Baghdad police station, wounding two policemen.

A roadside bomb also killed a U.S. soldier on patrol in western Iraq, officials said, while a mortar attack killed a woman and a child in their home in Tal Afar, 95 miles east of the Syrian border.

33. 'Horrified' US Ambassador Warns of Iraq Civil War
The new US ambassador to Iraq expressed horror at the violence wracking the country and said Islamic extremists and Saddam Hussein loyalists are trying to start a civil war. US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who arrived from Afghanistan, said yesterday that militants are using Iraqis as “cannon fodder” in a quest to dominate the Islamic world.

“I will work with Iraqis and others to break the back of the insurgency,” Khalilzad promised on a day that saw more than a dozen gunmen launch an assault on a Baghdad police station, wounding two policemen.A roadside bomb also killed a US soldier on patrol in western Iraq, officials said, while a mortar attack killed a woman and a child in their home in Tal Afar, 95 miles east of the Syrian border.

“I am horrified by the daily suffering of the Iraqi people. The terrorists attack ordinary people, teachers, doctors, newly trained police and others who are assisting the people of Iraq,” Khalilzad added.“Foreign terrorists and hard-line Baathists want Iraq to descend into civil war. Foreign terrorists are using the Iraqi people as cannon fodder,” said Khalilzad, who previously served as US ambassador to his native Afghanistan.

The number of attacks blamed on Islamic extremists has escalated since Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari announced his Shiite-led government on April 28. Nearly 1,200 people have been killed since then. Meanwhile, Iraq’s justice minister has accused the US of trying to hinder the Iraqi investigation of Saddam Hussein by limiting his access to interrogators, and said “it seems there are lots of secrets they want to hide.”

I wouldn't trust what this guy has to say, it's pure propaganda.

Sure things are bad in Iraq, but it is a popular uprising by the Sunnis against the occupation. Radical Islamist and Saddam loyalists i think play a small role overall.

Who is Zalmay Khalilzad and why is *he* the man on the ground in Iraq?

=========================================================

George Bush has named the disease: Islamic fundamentalist terrorism.

But rest easy. He has also named the cure: Dr. Zalmay Khalilzad.

Dr.

Meanwhile, Iraq’s justice minister has accused the US of trying to hinder the Iraqi investigation of Saddam Hussein by limiting his access to interrogators, and said “it seems there are lots of secrets they want to hide.”

51. What a slow learning curve he has...
Someone should tell him that one of the insurgency's first objectives is to get the US out of Iraq. Relentless assassinations, Abu Graib, the near destruction of Fallujah, estimated Iraqi casualties in excess of 100,000 and he is just getting around to "horrified"? Sporadic electricity and water, poor sewerage, outbreaks of disease, sabotage, endless lines for fuel and he is just getting around to horrified. He still has training wheels on his bicycle? :sarcasm:

66. No, I won't fall for it.
It just seemed like yesterday when (according to the Administration) things were rosy and Iraqis had purple thumbs. Now he is horrified. Of course I realize the primary objective of the insurgency is to get the US to leave. Your dedication to exposing their true motives (to stay in Iraq) is commendable and appreciated. Thanks :)

Yes the violance in Iraq is increasing.

Yes the situation in Iraq is deteriorating.

NO, it's not a civil war.

It's an insurgency.

NO, it's not "foreign fighters" or "foreign terrorists".

Less than 5% of the insurgents are "foreign" (other than the uniformed ones).

It's a homegrown insurgency.

Nice try though, at the usual imperialistic "we can't leave, civil war!" bullshit. bush will be pleased.

Next up, bush yammering on about the "progress" in Iraq.

59. U.S. Envoy: Iraq Militants Seek Civil War
America's new ambassador to Iraq expressed horror Tuesday at the violence wracking the country and said Islamic extremists and Saddam Hussein loyalists are trying to start a civil war.

"I am horrified by the daily suffering of the Iraqi people. The terrorists attack ordinary people, teachers, doctors, newly trained police and others who are assisting the people of Iraq," Khalilzad added.

64. yaáll want oil with that?
"Simply put, Khalilzad's appointment means oil. Oil for the United States. Oil for Unocal, a U.S. company long criticized for doing business in countries with repressive governments and rumored to have close ties to the Department of State and the intelligence community. Zalmay Khalilzad was an adviser for Unocal. In the mid-1990s
