Islamabad, 21 June (AKI/DAWN) - Pakistan's interior minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao has rejected claims that Osama bin Laden and Taliban leader Mullah Omar are in the country. The minister was referring to statements made by the former United States ambassador to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, that the al-Qaeda and Taliban chiefs were not in Afghanistan, implying that they could instead be in Pakistan.
“If Mr Khalilzad had information that top Taliban leaders were hiding in Pakistan then why did he not share it with the Pakistan government at that time,” Sherpao said, while talking to journalists on Monday.
Sherpao said that al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar were not in Pakistan.
The interior minister said efforts were being made to shatter any remaining parts of the al-Qaeda network in the country.
