High Tech Targets bad Bar Customers
Great my city is being taken over by facist bar owners....I won't be visiting ONE of the 35 bars that are doing this bullshit.

Vancouver bar patrons will soon have to produce identification and have their photograph taken every time they enter clubs or bars connected to an electronic network designed to red-flag troublemakers.

1. And they won't make trouble when...
... they're denied entry because they're on an electronic list? This _isn't_ going to eliminate the need for bouncers, and it's bound to cut down on business in general.

If bar owners using the system start seeing receipts going down, they might get the picture. I doubt they're going to save enough on insurance rates to make this system worthwhile. Here's an instance of the free market working in the way it should. Just don't patronize bars where you have to be included in someone's database--and tell everyone else to boycott the system's participants.

In Vancouver, I give it six months and it will be gone.

Cheers.

2. That's the plan
What other business has the gall to demand you let them take your picture to be shared among their colleges?

3. WTF?
Thanks HeyHey. Although I don't live in Vancouver, I hope all of the bar patrons boycott the bars using these devices! F***ing police state is right!

I don't care what they say, this surveillance is getting to be too much.

And I don't buy the argument that to give up a little freedom for safety is a good thing. Goddess protect me from those who want to keep me "safe!"

6. First off, you are so lucky to be living there!
I envy you. Van is my favorite (or favourite) North American city.
Second, this kind of thing won't go over with the boys in the backwoods *at all*. So, I recommend heading as far away from the city as possible. Try hoisting a few at the Silver Chalice just outside of Hope. At first sight of such a gizmo, the guys who drink there would get their saws out of their trucks, fire em up, and head back indoors...
P.S. how are the Canucks shaping up this year?

8. Bars are really respectable places too
I guess they have built in a protection that the bars can't have wonderful employees that might engage in ID theft or simply 'blacklist' people coz they don't buy enough, don't tip or claim about bad service.

I am sure the database will never be sold off to other 'interested' parties or anything...not like any Vancouver bar was never run by bikers ,asian gangs, dealers or the mob...

9. Let's go over a night out in Vancouver...
Edited on Wed Oct-08-03 12:35 AM by HEyHEY
Get dressed up, Spend $10 bucks in gas getting downtown, another ten on parking, oops...sorry you can't get in the pub without another ten dollar cover charge (Relative to bar). So there's $30 bucks...had a drink yet? NO.

"Oh wait one more thing..before we let you in (after shelling out $10) You have to line up against the wall for a photo..can we see your license and may we take down all the information on it too?"

Get inside...let's pay $5.50 a beer $7.00 for a good one. Oh boy the mediocre shit band they hired (cause they don't really care about being a cool bar, they just want to have the image of one) is playing mustang sally while I grow totally bored. Oh well time to leave...Pst the SS id machine at front..back to the car...THE CAR! Where the fuck is the car????? SHit musta been stolen...oh well I'll take the skytrain home...what? Last run at 1:15...but the bar is open until 4:00am...fuck guess I'll flag a cab...Yikes..almost hit by a drunk driver, if the train didn't close so early he'd maybe be on it....oh well "TAXI!"...what $60 bucks to get home!

Get home...having had a shit time and now the SS has your photo for the next time you come...just so they know...YOU won't wreck anyone elses fun before they let you in.
