Labor rebels to snub Bush
By Samantha Maiden
08oct03
REBEL Labor MPs are planning to wear white arm bands and turn their backs on President George W. Bush in an anti-war protest during his address to Parliament.

Their stance follows Prime Minister John Howard's confirmation yesterday Parliament will be recalled on October 23 for Mr Bush's speech and then suspended without question time or debate.

Tasmanian Labor MP Harry Quick an outspoken opponent of the war in Iraq said it was an "absolute travesty" to spend $2 million recalling Parliament for Mr Bush's 30-minute speech. "I am going to stand up and turn my back on him with my white arm band," Mr Quick said. "There's going to be a massive anti-war protest out the front and I'm going to be speaking at that, too."

The row is set to inflame tensions between the ALP and the US Embassy which lodged an official complaint over Labor frontbencher Mark Latham's comments the Coalition were a "congo line of suckholes" to the United States.

6. Australia-wide protests against Bush are planned.
On the day he arrives in Sydney (22nd) there will be rallies in every capital city, and a number of regional centres as well. The
Sydney rally will then march to the US Consulate to protest. On the
23rd, when Bush is due to address Parliament, there will be a rally
in Canberra at the US Embassy. The protests are covering anti-war feeling, justice for Palestine, and anti-free trade agreement as well.

3. Good for them!
and when Bush goes to London, I hear there will be some bare butts there to greet him! Gotta love this!

He won't even show his face in Canada! Probably knows that his reception would be less than kind as well.

4. Labor politicians have inspired great band names in the past...
one of the top bands down here is a group called The Whitlams. They named themselves after Gough Whitlam, a Labor PM from the 70's...

Just FYI.
