Germans Vote Yes to EU Constitution
Germany became the ninth country to approve the European Union's new constitution Friday, but Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder didn't stick around to celebrate: He hopped on a jet to rally voters in France.

The French appeared determined to rattle the continent and its leaders by saying "non" to the EU treaty in a referendum Sunday. If polls prove right, France will be the first country to vote down the charter strengthening the union it helped found.

But there was a late glimmer of hope for treaty supporters: a poll late Friday, the last expected before the vote, showed them narrowing the lead held by "no" campaigners.

French rejection of the constitution would throw Europe's forward momentum into disarray, especially if the Dutch follow France's lead in their referendum next week.

4. I have a question too
"(c) the prohibition on making the human body and its parts as such a source of financial gain;"

Does that include prostitution?

Oh, and I know I have a dirty mind. :P

7. Yes, I'd say you have a dirty mind
:-) because that comes after:

"In the fields of medicine and biology, the following must be respected in particular:"

but you already knew that, didn't you? ;-)

3. Interesting...
..the headline, at least at this moment, actually reads "Germany Latest to Approve EU Constitution"

"Germany's upper house of parliament approved the treaty Friday"

The German voters did not vote yes, their elected representatives did. The mainstream parties in France generally support the treaty as well, but the actual voters seem to be indicating that they in fact probably don't.

I don't know how the French or Dutch will ulimately vote, but if I had to place a bet - I'd say the treaty is dead in the water for some time to come.

5. Apparently, nobody's got a fall back plan if the French or Dutch vote no
So if that happens it'll be quite some time, probably years, before they have a revised treaty (or whatever).

FWIW, some analysts have said that the French vote is too close to call, but I've seen more say that the French will probably vote "no".

6. Germany would have had to change its own constitution to hold a referendum
they're currently not allowed in that country.

8. Germans didn't vote "Yes"
Hello from Germany,
our last hope is that the French will bring this neoliberal idiotism down. I'm pretty sure that the majority of Germans would vote against the constitution, too.
