Thousands rally against Quran desecration
---------------------------------------------
KARACHI: Over 5,000 people rallied against the alleged desecration of the Koran by US military interrogators at Guantanamo Bay prison here on Wednesday and burnt an effigy of United States President George W Bush, said witnesses.

The protestors, mostly Islamic students, also chanted anti-US slogans as they left the headquarters of Jamat-e-Islami and walked to hold a demonstration at the tomb of Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The rally was organised by the MMA, which called it a prelude to countrywide demonstrations expected on Friday. “These demonstrations will not stop unless the US apologises and punishes the American soldiers responsible for the desecration of the Quran,” MMA Vice President Ghafoor Ahmed told participants. afp

1. Do you think
that evangelical Americans would protest if they believed that members of the military of another country did the things to the Bible that the Muslims think our military did to their Koran? I'm asking. I'm not familiar enough with the current fundamentalist mentality to know.

2. Hmmmmm.
They get torqued about homosexual innuendo in Sponge Bob and Telly Tubbies. I'm thinking they would be a little on edge if they heard that Muslim tormentors were taking #2's on the Bible. Call me crazy.

7. Number one
they're already there. But if they weren't, they would just decry it, and make wounded sobs.

That doesn't bother me. Anybody can say whatever they want in this country, even if they're wrong. That's where the islamic fundies are different. They'd actually kill over that book of fairy tales rather than just whine about it. The term "Islamic Justice" is at least as oxymoronic as "military intelligence".

8. Yes
Interestingly, the Koran is supposed to be the actual words of god, whereas the bible is believed to be the human written story of god's words. So technically, taking a crap on the Koran is worse.:)

9. Who cares about the Evangelicals.
This is just a symptom of our loss of the ideological battle out there. The comparison is pointless.

4. Situations like these
only inflame hatred and make it more difficult for progressive Muslims, who believe in working people of all faiths, to gain support. I don't think a good Muslim would desecrate the Bible, as it is part of the Book given to the world by God.

for a long, long time. It will gain a life of its own as Muslim father tells Muslim son of the dis-respect America has for their religion.
Several years ago (close to 20 now) the United Way of America was tainted by scandal as the Director was discovered to have embezzled money. He was caught, served time and made restitution. He stole money but it was from the national organization not from local United Ways. Do you know how many times I hear about this incident when the United Way pops up in conversation?
Everyone (almost) links that mans' actions to the local office, which had nothing to do with it, nor was really affected by it. But people only remember the sensational and scandalous. So it will be with this Koran story regardless of the facts.........
edited for spelling :)
