FBI, ATF address domestic terrorism
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Violent animal rights extremists and eco-terrorists now pose one of the most serious terrorism threats to the nation, top federal law enforcement officials say.

Senior officials from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms (ATF) and Explosives told a Senate panel Wednesday of their growing concern over these groups.

Of particular concern are the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) and the Earth Liberation Front (ELF).

17. In Britain, the targeting of scientists homes who experiment on animals is
now being reported in the right wing media regularly as "urban terrorism". thes people are certainly active and do destroy propertyt, yet i've never heard of actual "violence" against persons. Some are extreme, but to deem someone a terrorist, who openly protests on the side of a road with no attempt to hide their identity and/or demands and views is proposterous. A dangerous path is being trod.

3. IMO it's just rhetorical posturing that will allow ...
this Administration to target - mostly peaceful - social justice groups. It's sad because I've heard stories that would lead me to believe that it's usually the FBI or Police infiltrator who attempts to initiate and/or encourage the use of violence.

Wow! <deep sigh> These people have no shame. :(

4. Wasn't it white supremacists
that blew up the Federal office building in Oklahoma City? Wasn't it right wing wackos in Waco that killed those ATF agents and stockpiled enough arms to start a mini world war?

I would think that the FBI and the ATF would be much more concerned about those types of groups?

31. This is certainly part of the push to crank up the Patriot Act and focus
it were it was always intended, domestically. With even the majority of mainstream geologists cited in the recent SAIC study for the DoE predicting world oil production to peak between now and 2010, we're pretty much seeing the lightblinking out at the end of the tunnel for our oil burning growth economy. The ruling class is just beginning to circle the wagons so to speak and prepare for when the sheep finally look up. After all, democracy is not for everyone, you know.

How about tobacco deaths??? It seems that might be a much bigger threat to the American people, than terrorism. 500,000 people die (DIE) from tobacco each year (YEAR). Let's review- half a million. Dead people. Each year. Oh, wait. I forgot that terrorism is whatever impedes the corporation. Oh, but I forgot that America is not for the people. Nor is it by the people. Nor is it of the people.

Seriously though, this is the beginnings of a nightmare scenario. Whereby any activists opposing government policy can have the suspicion of terrorism laid at their feet. The definitions of terrorism are spreading and spreading. This website will probably be outlawed eventually due to;

"destabilising the social order by the dissemination of inflammatory material, thus leading to uncertainty amongst the population, which in turn can result in fear. Therefore a terrorist activity."

What does Legal Self-Defense Against Riot Police Look Like?
By Kirsten Anderberg

We are in a societal crisis with police in America. I have said for twenty years that I would prefer to see anyone but a cop at the end of an alley alone, because a cop will get away with raping me and they definitely are armed. As a teen, I witnessed my sister have sex with a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer to get out of a felony crime she got caught red-handed in. My other sister said she, and her women friends, had sex with Boston Police to get out of vehicle tickets and criminal charges. This trend of women giving sexual favors to police to avoid criminal prosecution has been going on in front of me since I was a teen in the 1970?s. Knowing that many police officers expect sexual favors in return for criminal immunity has haunted me my whole life.

It doesn?t end with sexual harassment. I was in an interracial relationship in Los Angeles as a teen, and the LAPD also found a need to hassle us endlessly. As a white girl, it was a wake-up call, regarding the way police interact with minorities, and their interracial lovers. When I heard ex-LAPD cop Mark Furman say during the O.J. Simpson trials, that he routinely harassed interracial couples as a cop, I knew he was being honest. Once I was sitting alone on a park hill in LA with my lover at dusk, and I swear to god, we were assaulted by 3 police cars, 6 police officers, and a helicopter with a spotlight on us. They rolled the cop cars up onto the grass, jumped out with guns, and told us to ?drop the blanket.? We did. They searched us, they asked my black boyfriend if he was part of gangs, clubs?when he asked what they were talking about, they literally said, ?Are you in the Black Panthers?? I was stunned. He replied he was in the Ku Klux Klan. The police called my parents and told them I was in a park with a black man. My parents said they knew that! Finally, the police left. There was no crime being committed except two interracial lovers sitting on a hill at dusk! I learned early on that police are NOT to be trusted.

Now let?s fast-forward to 2003. Mothers, community elders and leaders, peace activists, WWll and Vietnam vets, teenagers, grannies, all converged on the Federal Building, to protest Bush?s Iraq war. The peace community had obtained the proper permits for marches, and 7 days occupation at the Federal Building plaza with a stage, sound system, etc. Yet when we got there, we were met by lines of Seattle Police officers anonymous in UNMARKED uniforms, with riot gear, guns that said ?LESS LETHAL? on them, machine guns (AR-15?s), helmets, shin guards, big baseball bat sticks, and they refused to talk to people at all. Seeing this intimidated many a protester to go home and STAY home after Thursday. By Saturday, these hoardes of riot police acting like Robocops, now included snipers, Federal riot squads, and police from every surrounding county. Everyone assumed these police WANTED to riot, INTENDED on rioting (look how they were dressed), and WERE THERE to riot. If any other group of people showed up like that to a protest, YOU WOULD CALL THE POLICE FOR HELP! So, only the brave continued to protest the war, against the swarms of heavily-armed Homeland Security agents at the Federal Building. Finally, on Saturday eve, March 22, 2003, the SPD and Federal riot police finally got to play riot. They contained peaceful protesters in downtown Seattle, myself included, between Marion and Spring Streets on First Avenue, and they would not let anyone leave and then began to beat people. I am not kidding. I was there. They would not let us leave. They would not tell us what they wanted. And they were angry, unidentified, violent, and beyond all law. They acted like terrorists, I was terrified.

Then in April 2003, Tacoma Police Chief Brahm shoots himself and his wife. Now, Tacoma is an area where police ROUTINELY harass the minority population, and police corruption is said to be tremendous. With the death of Brahm and his wife, in front of his own kids no less, it then came out that Brahm had previously raped a woman, and other Tacoma Police KNEW this. Brahm also failed TWO departmental psychological evaluations regarding his potential promotion to police chief. And yet this guy was promoted to Police Chief ANYWAY. Again, I have known police rape girls and women since I was in my teens in suburban Los Angeles. This did not shock me. The fact that Brahms cried after he raped the woman, saying he would go to his church for help, made me even more sick. Brahsm apologized for the rape to the woman in FRONT OF ANOTHER TACOMA COP! Brahms raped a woman, another Tacoma Police officer KNEW he did it because Brahms confessed IN FRONT OF THE OFFICER, and yet he continued on as Police Chief! Then he killed himself, and his wife, because she tried to get away from him! There were warnings all along the way and everyone knows it. Women are simply unsafe when alone with male police officers, is my gut feeling at this point. There is no method for checks and balances, and this is a very, very serious problem.

36. IMO, the threat to the fascist state is in the tactics of ALF and ELF.
Edited on Fri May-20-05 11:46 AM by Zorra
ALF and ELF have no discernible organization. They seldom if ever communicate, and if they do it is not in a manner that can be detected through electronic surveillance.

The actions of these "groups" are actually random actions by individuals that have similar ideas. The idea is that if there is no detectable organization, there is no way for the FBI to watch and infiltrate, so there is no way for the FBI to catch ELF and ALF "members" unless they get really lucky.

The main concern of the FBI and the ATF is that the tactical ideas and practices of ALF and ELF will spread to the opposition of the fascist Bush dictatorship. As fascist repression in the US becomes more apparent, and it becomes obvious democratic recourse as a means of opposition to the fascist state are moot, individuals may begin to commit random violent acts against the fascist regime as a form of resistance, and the worry is that widespread recognition of random individual acts as an effective means of resistance may become a significant means of beginning a revolution against the fascist state. Organizations and their activities can be monitored and infiltrated. Random actions by substantial numbers of like minded individuals cannot, and significant numbers of completely innocent individuals can only be monitored with great difficulty and this practice is time and resource consuming an culminates with little or no result.

This is a main reason for the "lone wolf" provison in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act; for all practical purposes, it gives the government the "right" to investigate anyone at any time even when they have no evidence that an individual has done anything wrong.

This is why ALF and ELF, organizations that have not been responsible for any deaths, present a threat to the fascist regime and are placed at the top of the list by the FBI and ATF, while violent RW groups that will kill, and have killed, are not much of a concern. RW groups may kill a bunch of people, but do not represent a threat to the fascist state.

But the tactics of ALF and ELF could provide an example for effective resistance actions against a repressive totalitarian police state.

(Anyway, that's my take on this.) ;-)

24. Eco-Militants are the Greatest Terrorist Threat, Warns FBI
Eco-militants are greatest terrorist threat, warns FBI
By David Usborne in New York

20 May 2005

The FBI has sounded a new and surprising alarm, suggesting environmental and animal-welfare militants are now the biggest terrorist threat in the US, increasingly using incendiary devices on targets ranging from housing developments and research laboratories to car dealerships.

John Lewis, the agency's deputy assistant director for counter-terrorism, told a senate committee in Washington that the militant groups were "way out in front" in economic damage. He also suggested it would not be long before loss of human life was added to their tally of crimes.

"There is nothing else going on in this country over the past several years that is racking up the high number of violent crimes and terrorist actions," he told senators, prompting some Democrats on the panel to warn against tagging all environmental and animal rights organisations with the same label.

The hearing, held by the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, was an unusual detour from the US government's more familiar preoccupation with terrorist threats from foreign groups such as al-Qa'ida. The FBI said it has 150 investigations into 1,200 crimes allegedly committed by eco-terrorists and animal welfare militants between 1990 and 2004.

38. FBI calls UK animal activists terrorists
Jamie Wilson in Washington
Friday May 20, 2005
The Guardian

Environmental extremists and animal rights activists, including the British-based Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, pose one of the most serious terrorism threats to the US, according to the FBI.

John Lewis, the FBI's deputy assistant director for counter terrorism, told a Senate committee that activists had claimed responsibility for more than 1,200 criminal incidents in the US since 1990, including arson and bombing attacks against animal research laboratories and the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

"There is nothing else going on in this country over the last several years that is racking up the high number of violent crimes and terrorist actions," Mr Lewis said.

He singled out the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) and Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (Shac) as being of particular concern.

39. Everyone is a bastard, according to the evil BFEE
especially if they care for all living things, even animals. I can understand using rats, mice; rodents, for want of a better word. What I can't condone is when a huge corporation like Procter & Gamble refuses to purchase the more modern equipment that will take the place of animal testing. Their tests include some horrific, unspeakable things done to rabbits, puppies and kittens. There's not a lot I can do to protest these companies, but for my part, I do not purchase their products...........no Dawn, Downy, Miss Clairol, etc, etc. Believe me, if there ever was a nation-wide boycott against these companies, I would be there front and center.

Global Day of Action Against Proctor & Gamble -- May 21, 2005

Last year over 140 boycott P&G events took place all over the world - from Auckland to Aberdeen - making it one of the largest days of action of its kind in the world. P&G continues to test on animals when hundreds of other companies have stopped.

P&G still routinely poisons and kills thousands of animals every year. Its "pet" food subsidiary, IAMS/Eukanuba, continues to secretly vivisect and kill cats and dogs in "pet" food research tests not required by law.

Please speak up for the dogs, cats, mice and rats suffering each day at the hands of corporate giant P&G by taking part in this international day of action against P&G's cruel and unnecessary animal testing.

I found a list of the protests being held in the U.S. tomorrow.

42. Nice to know that they consider these people terrorists...
when the people of the likes of eric rudolf, bombing planned parenthood clinics and killing doctors are just a criminals.

Hate is a powerful word. I hate this administration and how they are redefining humanity.

50. Well that is really dumb...
As far as I can tell, and I believe the scientific communty largely agrees, the species Homo Sapiens Sapiens is a species of animal. That being said, how many people have been killed by animal activists again? Compare their kill rate to that of Operation Rescue, Al Queda or the KKK. Who are terrorists again, and who are just agitators?

49. Nothing else racking up this kind of record of violence?
I beg to differ, Mr. Lewis of the FBI. But you're not interested in those sorts of crimes, so you can make testify to such nonsense at the Senate.

51. The FBI couldn't find a real terrorist if the terrorist knocked on their
door and presented certified documentation as a terrorist.

Who did 9-11? Hint: Look in the White House for the perpetrators.

63. This is an alarming attack on the left, as right-wing terrorists...
who have struck with deadly consequences in Oklahoma City, at abortion clinics, at the Atlanta Olympics, etc., are ignored. It leads to fears that they are preparing for the day they can round us all up.
