Alliance@IBM Urges "Day of Action" to Protest Layoffs

Fed up with the impending layoffs of up to 13,000 IBMers, the IBM employees union, Alliance@IBM, is urging all members and IBMers worldwide to take action on Monday, May 23.

In other parts of the world, that action may include strikes. But since the Alliance hasn't yet attained enough membership to make it a "ratified" union in the U.S., it is calling for more subtle, symbolic action in the U.S.

Chiefly, the Alliance is encouraging all IBMers to wear black and blue to signify the pain of job cuts on IBM employees and their families. Also, the group would like IBMers to take their breaks at 1 p.m. Eastern time to observe a 10-minute moment of silence — no Sametime and no phone calls, either — in support of IBMers worldwide who are facing layoffs.

3. No one seems to have helped others in
this situation and that is too bad but it has to start somewhere. We need to start doing something to protest this mess and support workers.
