Riede (DUer Rabid Nerd) wins McSherrystown mayoral nod
By CHRISTINA KRISTOFIC
Evening Sun Reporter

Even though he learned that he might have to take a pay cut next year, Herbert Riede said he was feeling great Tuesday night.

The 27-year-old McSherrystown borough councilman took the Democratic nomination for the McSherrystown mayoral seat by beating his opponent, 47-year-old Ken Moul, 86-38 in the primary election.

Riede will go on to become mayor of McSherrystown in 2006 unless someone begins a write-in campaign or a minor party challenger surfaces before the general election in November.

Moul could not be reached for comment.

We have three, maybe four computers, tops.. (That includes our police station)...

Our annual budget is $1.1M annually, and I don't think we're that big, sorry!

We're a little TOO local for that.. All of our employees, except for one office assistant for our appointed Secretary/Treasurer are either Police or Highways.

All said I don't think we even hit ten employees (including police) during the summer with temp help.

If you're looking for IT stuff I might be able to find something around here though...

But thanks!...

NO REPUBLICAN FILED, and I received the most write-ins on the Republican Primary ballot. I may have won the REPUBLICAN NOMINATION FOR MAYOR. (It requires 10 write ins. I got nine perfect write-ins, plus 4 more with misspellings or a missing first name... If ONE counts, I win both nominations). How many DUers will read this hidden nugget?

60. I raised about $400, had one fundraiser,
Edited on Wed May-18-05 07:46 PM by rabid_nerd
and knocked on about 100 doors (selected for likliness to vote in the primary based on last municipal primary election)...

I also had a half dozen yard signs, 100 of my own buttons for co-workers, supporters and friends (UNION PRINTED):

I know this is the boring, non-populist campaign-school way to do it (not knocking on every door on every street whether they're going to vote in the closed party primary or not) but on the other hand, you go to my website, or read the newspaper and my home phone number is listed, as well as my home address.

I tell people I work 9-5, so RSVP and come on over in the evening and tell me whats up or I'll come to you whenever you want.

With 2750 people, less than many towns and cities but still enough to take 8 years to know everyone if you talk to one new person a day.

And I've only lived here 4 years!

69. About the casino in G'Burg
Edited on Wed May-18-05 11:12 PM by rabid_nerd
Green Party is solidly against.
Dem Party and DFA is neutral.
Rep Party is confused.

LeVan is a BIG contributor to Rendell.

The arguments against:

- Moral (national park preservationists)
Putting a casino in Gettysburg would damage the historic significance and atmosphere of Gettysburg. This is primarily an argument by preservationists, who are largely not local to the area.

This argument rings hollow to many locals, who see this area as open space to be preserved more so than battlefield to be preserved. The "rolling over in their graves" theory simply sells as rhetoric.

- Moral/Statistical (anti-gambling)
Gambling corrodes moral fiber/is morally wrong, raises the crime rate, raises social service use, hurts senior citizens, etc.

Valid points, many people from the Charlestown and Chester, WV areas from pre-Casino times telling horror stories, which are very relevant, since WV is what PA has approved - slot-only parlors. The points are not as pronounced, however, as the rhetoric-filled examples from Atlantic City natives that do not apply to this scenario. On the gambling is wrong point, what about Bingo at Church? Lottery to fund Senior programs? This is Slots to more equitably fund Education. The impact to Fire Hall and Church Bingos and the lottery should be taken into effect.

- Local Land Use Control Pre-Emption (anti-big brother)
The casino, if licensed by the state, does not have to comply with local zoning. THERE ARE BIG TRAFFIC ISSUES IN ADAMS COUNTY AND GETTYSBURG THAT WOULD BE EXACERBATED BY THIS CASINO.

As a municipal official myself, this is unacceptable. But on this particular casino, instead of a knee jerk anti-casino reaction, I'd prefer to hear from those township supervisors about this and whether this casino would pass zoning. If so, it's a moot issue. If not, play they game. If the officials who would be in charge of preventing this or approving this wouldn't step in the way, there's no point in fighting on this here. I just know it wouldn't happen if I had a vote in the matter.

The arguments for are generally $$$ money and increased tourism and jobs $$$, and that compared to the Super Wal Mart or homes that WILL ASSUREDLY be built on the Gateway Gettysburg land otherwise, this is a better use of the land.

It is definately a fight not to be missed. But there are only two Class 2 Slot Licenses with at least 3 applicants, of which this is one. LeVan's not likely one to publicize something he doesn't have in the bag, but it's not a definate thing yet - of course they will likely expand the number of licenses someday, and he's already broken the ice.

I think a Gettysburg Casino is inevitable.

The conservation movement is a breeding ground of communists
and other subversives. We intend to clean them out,
even if it means rounding up every birdwatcher in the country.
