A South Korean unit of the General Motors Corp is suing a Chinese automobile company for copying one of its automobile designs, the BBC reported.

GM Daweoo, the South Korean unit of GM, said Monday it has filed a lawsuit in the Beijing Number One Intermediate People's Court against China's SAIC Chery Automobile Co. for copying the body structure of its Daweoo Matiz in SAIC's Chery QQ model. GM To Sink $3 Billion into China Expansion

General Motors (NYSE: GM) will invest US$3 billion to expand operations in China in the next three years, a massive outlay of capital that will enable it to double its output in the country that is home to one of the world's fastest-growing economies.

GM, the world's leading automaker, and its partners will introduce some 20 new vehicles, including American-made Cadillacs, into the Chinese market, expand manufacturing capabilities there and set up a new auto financing joint venture. The investments, which come on top of $2 billion already spent, will enable GM to boost annual capacity in China to 1.3 million vehicles by 2007.
Land of Opportunity

The move underscores the growing importance of the Chinese economy to an international company's success. Scores of U.S.-based companies have set up Chinese joint ventures, or bought Chinese companies.

GM will move to establish plants in China that can be adapted to make new models and work with local agencies to establish what will be the most advanced prototype laboratory in China, the first virtual-reality design studio and a noise and vibration testing lab.

GM's financing wing, General Motors Acceptance Corp., will also partner with local agencies to launch a car-loan company.

7. oh, there is a lesson to be learned...
i think the real question is whether the lesson will be learned.

to think, chevrolet and other brand names synonymous with america will go the way of zenith. i could almost be nostalgic and sad... almost, if it wasn't so stubbornly brought upon by themselves.

5. Those who've assumed that the first Chinese cars we might see to be
the equal of, say, what we saw from Japan in the early 70s might be in for a shock, based on what I've heard from people who've actually worked with Chinese made motor vehicles that've made their way into this country -- in this case, motorscooters.

So far, the quality from mainland China has been utterly wretched. (OTOH, Taiwanese Kymco scooters are quite good.)

Not that this is permanent--Korea's first cars sold here were buzzy and prone to fall apart as well, and nowadays Hyndai has a solid rep.

6. It's my understanding that China utilizes prison labor
Quality is more than a buzzword, it's mandatory.
Probably why the Chinese crap is so much better than the old Taiwan crap.

The bad news is that now almost everthing will get you time in the slammer.

that has been outsourced to them by U.S. manufacturers. They have the molds, materials and know how, this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
