Ahead of polls, Blair majority melting away
London, May 3: With only a day to go before Thursday’s general election in Britain, Tony Blair’s massive majority of 161 in the last parliament seems to be melting away faster than an ice cream in the Calcutta sun.

---

Most ominously for the Prime Minister, Iraq has forced itself back into the agenda with the family of Anthony Wakefield, 24, of the 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards, bitterly blaming Blair for his death. He was killed by a roadside bomb on Sunday, the 87th British soldier to have died in Iraq.

---

She said: “As soon as he knocked on the door I knew something had happened to Anthony. I couldn’t take it in. It’s just heartbreaking. Since yesterday, I’ve cried and stopped crying and cried. It was just so devastating.”

Scott stood to attention in his pyjamas on the doorstep of the family home and said in a trembling voice: “I am proud of my daddy; he served his country and he died a hero.”

3. So if Blair/Labor isn't elected, how does this effect
the US? Is the other party anti-war? Will the Brits pull their troops out? Will the blivet* lose his one big ally?

The Bush Misadministration has been hedging its' bets for quite some time now.

14. Boosh** Would Love to See the Tories Win
It would be like hitting the Trifecta AGAIN.

1. Blackmail Bliar and make him support the war
2. Bliar destroyed politically
3. Tories take over for another generation.

The Tories are the warmongers. Most of Bliar's own party oppose the war.

19. I've always suspected a secret agenda of destroying Labour
that the whole business of enticing Tony Blair into supporting this hideous mis-adventure was designed to wipe out Labour entirely

18. troops will stay
The only anti war party were the lib dem's and they've got no chance of winning.

The Tories are an archaic bunch of old Englanders, the type who still think we own Africa so they won't pull the troops out. They still think the whole thing was a bloody good idea

4. It would be nice to see somebody take a hit for this travesty.
Maybe, it would make the leaders of the world think twice before dragging their people to war if they knew there would be political consequences. It's obvious those consequences were squelched here and in Australia as well. Maybe, Blair will be the one to pay.

7. Not holding my breath on this, but keep an eye on Italy too.
And Australia is feeling alienated a bit from what I can tell.
And all hell is breaking loose in Latin America, albeit slowly.

16. Yes
But I don't think Blair would go down a lone though. Just a "gut feeling" I guess you can say. I think if he goes down he'll bring Bush with him and Bush will bring down all his croonies.

17. I wish you were right.
I just don't see Bush going down. He's gotten away with so much for so long. We've entered the Twilight Zone. If he goes down, it will be a miracle.

10. Within the Reuters article is a key line, imo

"But electors are still wavering -- MORI found more than a third of voters said they may change their minds." This may be why the conflicting headlines, voters are changing their minds as the election gets ever closer and the news on Blair's lies is becoming bigger.

Edited to add: The MORI poll was taken from Apr. 29 - May 1, I wonder if the latest memo will resonate?

11. It seems like the Britons care about their soldiers,
unlike Americans, most of whom couldn't even tell you how many have died. What a pathetic country Bush and Limpballs have made this.

12.  Thanks Tony
Blair deserves to go down, anyone who would blindly follow Bush into a war for his own vain glory is pathetic. Blair provided just enough cover to legitimize the so called "coalition of the willing".Without Blair it would have been US against the entire international community (US lackey's excepted).
So, thanks Tony your naive belief that you and Boy Bush could bring your own type of Christian democracy and peace to the middle east will go down in history as one of this centuries most stupid and costly mistakes.

15. Welcome to DU TexasChief!
And, I agree with your post. Without Blair (British support), Iraq would not have happened.

There is no punishment too harsh for Blair. Hopefully, the good people of England will give him a well-earned boot.

13. Scott, you should be proud of your Daddy and he did die a hero.
But, I'm sorry, sweet child, your father was not serving his country at the time. He was in the service of Little Boots.

Poor kid.

20. Tories voted to keep Blair in power. Vote LibDem. Prevent Tories from
taking out Labour in close areas when needed. In general, vote LibDem, tho.

21. Charles Kennedy
Had he been prime minister, the war would have never taken this person's life.

Wake up UK. You're already behaving too much like the US.
