Texas Won't Name Road After Willie Nelson
I love Willie, this is soooooo lame! :eyes:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050429/ap_en_mu/people_nelson

Singer Willie Nelson's name is off the road again.

A state legislator had proposed naming a 49-mile stretch of Texas Highway 130 being built around Austin in Nelson's honor.

But two Republican senators, Steve Odgen of Bryan and Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio, said they didn't want Nelson's name on the road that crosses their districts, citing the musician's fondness for drinking and smoking, and active campaigning for Democratic candidates.

"It's frustrating, and sad in a way, but at this point, there is no reason to make this an unpleasant experience for anyone, especially Willie, so I'll take no further action on the bill," Sen. Gonzalo Barrientos, an Austin Democrat and the bill's author, said Wednesday.

Barrientos said he wanted to honor Nelson, "who has been responsible for so much good music and so many good works."

Willie deserves to have a road named in his honor. The man is a state treasure. The repugs are blocking this honor in part becasue willie supports Democrats.

From the Brill Building to an American Legend...he doesn't have to apologize to anyone, especially in Texas. Willie is Texas.

30. Bob Dylan to join Willie Nelson for 4th of July Texas Picnic
http://www.timesargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050414/NEWS/504140356/1023

April 14, 2005

New York Times

FORT WORTH — Willie Nelson will take his Independence Day road show to the Fort Worth Stockyards again this year — and he's bringing along Bob Dylan.

For the second year in a row, Nelson's 32nd annual Fourth of July Picnic will take place at the 40-acre North Forty Field in the Fort Worth Stockyards, the concert's marketing team announced this week.

Tickets will go on sale for $40, plus service charges, at 10 a.m. April 25 through Ticketmaster and Billy Bob's Texas' box office.

Nelson, Dylan and Texas rock trio Los Lonely Boys are confirmed for the daylong concert. Over the next few weeks, about 20 more acts will be announced, said Pam Minick, the festival's marketing director.

But obviously, getting Dylan is the major coup.

"It's freakin' huge for Fort Worth," Minick says. "I can't even remember the last time he played Fort Worth."

34. You really think Willie cares about having his name on a
50 mile stretch of concrete? I'm pretty sure that he'd feel more honored with his name attached to something a little more cultural, more colorful. An annual music festival to support the struggling farmers perhaps.

The repukes come across as petty and petulant, which they are. Willie is a Texas icon. This might be straying a little from the discussion at hand, but I think Willie has one of the sweetest smiles I've ever seen. Anybody else ever notice it?
