FT. BRAGG, N.C. — Army officers who once supervised convicted double-murderer Sgt. Hasan Akbar testified today that he was unfit for duty and indicated that he probably never should have been allowed to deploy with other American soldiers to the Middle East.
They cited what they characterized as bizarre behavior and his deep religious beliefs.
A 34-year-old Muslim, Akbar was found guilty last week of premeditated murder in the deaths of two officers, as well as premeditated attempted murder in the wounding of 14 others. He faces three possible sentences: Death, life with no parole, or life with parole.
Akbar plans to take the witness stand Thursday and make an unsworn statement, a procedure under military court law that allows him to address the jury without being subjected to grilling from prosecutors.
