(WV) Homeland security officer quits (under cloud of investigation)

A state official responsible for homeland security in West Virginia resigned last week amid an investigation into emergency equipment purchases and his use of the state plane and helicopter.

Neal Sharp, the director of the state’s Rapid Response Team, oversaw more than $20 million in equipment purchases that were paid for with federal homeland security grants.

Sharp hired his son as a contract employee to work at the state’s homeland security warehouse in Big Chimney, according to state officials. He also bought emergency equipment through friends.

Investigators also are examining about a dozen trips Sharp made on the state plane and a Department of Environmental Protection helicopter in recent years.

1. I don't get it...
How hard is it to just do your job? I'm pretty confident that if I were to be given a job of authority and public trust I would not abuse the former nor violate the latter. What kind of climate do we live in that inspires so many people to see what they can get away with?
