Canada pushes to reunite immigrant parents with children...
Canada pushes to reunite immigrant parents with children, allow foreign students to work

TORONTO - Canada opened its arms wider to foreigners Monday, enticing foreign students to join the Canadian work force once they graduate and announcing it would be easier for immigrant parents to join their children who already live in Canada.
....
Volpe said that as of this week, parents and grandparents waiting for their immigration visas to be processed would be granted five-year, multiple-entry visas so that they could visit their children in Canada in the interim _ a move that's bound to be popular with the large Chinese and Indian communities here.

Currently, a decision on an immigration application can take up to five years; Volpe wants that to come down to eight to 12 months.

While the United States has attempted to limit the number of refugees and immigrants since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Canada is seeking more immigrants to add to its population of 33 million, which badly needs more skilled workers, as well as students on college campuses.

Want To Move? Canada's Arms Are Open

POSTED: 7:19 am EDT April 19, 2005

TORONTO -- Canada is opening its arms even wider to foreigners.

Ottawa is relaxing work rules that it hopes will entice more international students to join Canada's work force once they graduate. Canada is also making it easier for immigrant parents to join children already in the country.

The United States, meanwhile, has attempted to limit the number of refugees and immigrants since 9/11. The United States is also hoping to stem the stream of illegal aliens crossing the border from Mexico each year.

But Canada is seeking more immigrants to complement its relatively small population of 33 million, which needs more skilled workers.
