WP: Clinton Plans Two-Year Tenure as U.N. Envoy, Aide Says
UNITED NATIONS, April 9 -- Former president Bill Clinton will spend at least two years in his new role as the top U.N. envoy promoting recovery in tsunami-hit countries and demanding accountability for the unprecedented billions of dollars donated by countries and individuals, his deputy said.

Erskine B. Bowles said Clinton will also push for the construction of better homes, schools and hospitals in areas devastated by the killer waves and adoption of new measures to warn against disasters and ensure quick action by governments when they occur.

Clinton's goal is to work for the tsunami victims he met on his first trip to the region in February as a U.S. envoy with former president George H.W. Bush and make sure "we leave these people better off than they were before this horrendous event occurred," Bowles said.

Bowles, who was Clinton's chief of staff at the White House from 1996 to 1998 and is now the United Nations' deputy special envoy for tsunami recovery, traveled to Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives in March for a firsthand view of the devastation while the former president was recovering from heart surgery.

1. Just what this country needs.....he'll be wildly successful in this
role. It's gonna piss Bush off, no doubt.

2. Other guys...
Would play golf, get drunk and write some more books. Him? He's gonna go and, perhaps, rescue America's image in the world.

Always try to remember that, in spite of his faults, America once had a real president. It wasn't all that long ago.

9. It seems to be the repukes
who play golf, write books, go horseback riding etc. Jimmy Carter joined Habitat for Humanity, monitored 3rd world elections and did other notable things. Nixon, Ford, Raygun, and Senior haven't done much of anything besides cash in.

3. Alright Big Dog!
He can remind people across the world that not everyone in the US is a self-centered, neocon, religious fanatic who doesn't give a shit about the rest of the world. :-)

11. Bush appointed him to keep Clinton out of the US, I suspect.
So now Bill won't be around to campaign for Hilary, or make appearances for the Democratic party, or speak out against the Republicans in power.

Sadly, the only decent appointment Bush has ever made was done for totally nefarious reasons.

12. Now we see why he is kissing Bush's ass. He likely needed approval
for the position from the WH.
