South Australia's Parliamentary Speaker Peter Lewis has resigned after an outcry about the publicising of the name of an MP alleged to have been involved in child sexual abuse.

The Speaker and volunteers from his office were responsible for a number of allegations of paedophilia in high places.

For decades South Australia has been dogged by allegations of a protected network of paedophiles, operating in the highest circles of the judiciary, police and government.

In the past it's been referred to as "The Family".

The rumours have been given new life in the last week, with allegations from the parliamentary Speaker Peter Lewis that a serving member of Parliament was involved in paedophile activity and preyed on boys at a notorious gay beat in Adelaide's South Parklands.

Allegations have now surfaced that a serving member of the judiciary passed his teenage son around to paedophiles.

2. Police suspect gay man was murdered

The death of a gay man, who alleged the existence of a paedophile MP to South Australia's parliamentary speaker, was declared a suspected murder by police.

The body of Shaine Moore was found at his north suburban Adelaide house on February 25 this year in what police initially described as suspicious circumstances.

On Friday, police said they suspected the 33-year-old had been murdered, declaring the death a major crime.

A police spokesman would not comment on how Mr Moore died.

Mr Moore was one of two homosexual men who alleged to Parliamentary Speaker Peter Lewis there was a paedophile MP in state parliament.

The other man, Robert Woodland, 36, was found bashed to death last December in Adelaide's south parklands, a known homosexual meeting place.

The Commissioner inquiring into the sexual abuse of children in South Australia has confirmed today that he will personally investigate claims that a serving member of the judiciary is a paedophile.

During the first three months of the inquiry the Commissioner, Former Supreme Court Justice Ted Mullighan, has been overwhelmed with allegations of abuse. So far he's heard from 400 witnesses – more than double the number expected.

The latest allegations were raised by a nurse and a social worker, and the Commissioner says the grave nature of these claims means he will expedite hearings into the matter and pass on all relevant information to police.

4. "The Real Hero, Peter Lewis"

SOUTH Australian MP Peter Lewis has quit as parliamentary speaker, feeling betrayed by a Labor Government he said should be addressing his claim that one of the state's sitting MPs was a pedophile.

Mr. Lewis, the Independent who handed government to Labor at the 2002 election with his decisive vote of support, claimed today there was a network of "organised activity" between a group of high society pedophiles in Australia involving politicians, the judiciary and public servants.

In a 20-minute address to Parliament, Mr. Lewis defended raising his claims of a serving pedophile MP – allegations now under police investigation. Mr. Lewis said two gay men, since murdered, had separately told his office of an MP who frequented Adelaide's south parklands, a known homosexual haunt.

Suggesting the subsequent murders of the men could not be dismissed as coincidence, two volunteers who worked from Mr. Lewis's office last Friday released statutory declarations naming four prominent Adelaide people as pedophiles. Two of those named were police officers, and Police Commissioner Mal Hyde today said the claims were now being investigated.
