An Australian navy helicopter carrying up to 11 people crashed today on the earthquake-devastated Indonesian island of Nias, the defence ministry said, and media reported that nine people were killed.
The navy Sea King helicopter crashed near the town of Gunung Sitoli, off the west coast of Sumatra, in the afternoon, a defence statement said.
The helicopter was from an Australian navy transport ship that arrived today from Singapore after three months providing tsunami relief at the Indonesian province of Aceh.

The Australian Associated Press - which had a journalist on the transport ship, the HMAS Kanimbla - quoted the captain as saying nine people were killed in the crash.

Always sad when people engaged in humanitarian work lose their lives. My condolences to Australians.
