Schiavo's Parents Beg Court to Act Quickly

By JILL BARTON, Associated Press Writer

TAMPA, Fla. - Warning that Terri Schiavo was "fading quickly" and might die at any moment, her parents begged a federal appeals court Tuesday to order the severely brain-damaged woman's feeding tube reinserted........

.......Her uncle, Mike Tammaro, said she appearing to be growing weak Tuesday.
"Over the past, when I've been in to see Terri, she responds and turns when you talk to her. She's not doing that today," he said.

......The Bush administration "would have preferred a different ruling" from the federal judge, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said in Albuquerque, N.M., where the president was visiting a senior center. "We hope that they would be able to have relief through the appeals process."

At the same time, Howard Simon, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (news - web sites) of Florida, praised the ruling. "What this judge did is protect the freedom of people to make their own end-of-life decisions without the intrusion of politicians," he said..........

1. I have no doubt the court will act quickly
To dismiss their claim for lack of merit.

20. 6mo baby removed from life support AGAINST mother wishes - SUN HUDSON!
So does this: On the same day President Bush interrupted his vacation and rushed to Washington to sign the Schiavo bill, a Texas hospital removed the breathing tube keeping 6-month-old Sun Hudson alive. According to The Houston Chronicle, the hospital's action, the first of its kind, was made possible by a 1999 bill signed into law by Bush, then Texas's governor.

2. I thought the courts did act quickly and sided against them.
This is a terrible situation for her parents and I don't wish it on anyone. At the same time, though, they have consistently been turned away by the courts and the courts have favored the wishes of their daughter.

At some point you have to say goodbye to your children.

3. If she does die, we will hear fantastic stories (lies, really)
".......Her uncle, Mike Tammaro, said she appearing to be growing weak Tuesday.
"Over the past, when I've been in to see Terri, she responds and turns when you talk to her. She's not doing that today," he said."

The faction of Christians that are delusional on this subject will begin to create all sorts of legends about her, once this is over. They will claim she was laughing, talking, singing, perhaps even dancing, when "Clinton's judge" cruelly cut her down. Watch for it.

Reality is no bar for people like this. In fact, the avoidance of reality is considered a sign of grace.

Soon we'll be hearing about how Terri has appeared to people in dreams and told them how she wants a blue plate special.

10. No kidding.
Plus, they will say anything, ANYTHING, to get their way. It doesn't matter how outrageous the lie - if it suits their purpose, they'll say it. That's the scariest part - and the MSM buys right into it.

13. Have you heard this one?
Someone told me that last week (or so), they'd asked Terri to say "I want to live." And according to Mrs. Schindler, Terri managed to say "I want" and then started crying. If it were even POSSIBLE for Terri to say "I want" (which it is not), have they not considered that maybe she was trying to say I WANT TO DIE?

You're right, we haven't heard the best of the stories yet. It's fascinating to see human denial at work (as long as no legislation that adversely affects the rest of us is created because of it).

17. Yeah, I heard that one.
People can impute all kinds of meaning into a sound, assuming there even was an utterance. I had a brother in law die of cancer recently. The doctors told us that near the end, guttural utterances are pretty common, but they aren't really anything more than reflexes. People often "sleep" with their eyes open near the end too, which is unsettling. Twitches and random eye movements are also common.

People have a tremendous intuition that 'eyes are the window of the soul', so it is hard to accept that eye rolling and so forth doesn't have some communication purpose. They forget though, that much eye movement is instinctive and a lower brain process. For example, if you throw a crumpled up piece of paper at someone's face, they will instinctively blink. It isn't a conscious act.

I can understand why some people have a hard time accepting this case, but 15 years ought to tell them something.

8. What selfish people
It's all about them and their politics. No parent could do this to a child they truly loved. Dying is probably the most private thing I would ever imagine doing other than sex. I certainly don't want pictures of me in that state flashed 24/7, around the world. If my parents ever did this to me, you have my permission to execute them.

...it has nothing to do with their daughter 'wants'. She is long since dead.

These nut-jobs are driven to blindness in the blizzard of their own dogma. They are living in some other galaxy from Reality.

PS: this is why I wrote in another post that they (the parents/family) need an exorcist. :7 In fact, they're downright scary.

15. What kind of parents would DO this to their daughter?
She is trapped in a hellish limbo, unable to speak, eat, move, or care for herself; undoubtedly, advanced cognition and memory are lost to her as well. No humanity, no dignity.

This is not life. This is a grotesque mockery of life.

Why won't they let her go?

That's the kind of parents who will hang onto any false hope of their kid being made over in their image.

27. We are long past the point when that was an acceptable excuse.
I challenge them to find ONE neurologist who will publicly state that there is a reasonable chance for significant recovery of cortical function and raising her quality of life, after viewing the CAT scan.

It has been fifteen years. Maybe when it was just a few months, or a couple years after the accident, their irrationality could be forgiven. But not anymore. The duty of a guardian is to make terrible decisions, even if it hurts you. It won't hurt Terri, that's for certain.

When I looked at excerpts from those videos, all I could think is that I would sooner take fifty lashes than leave my dog to languish in this condition, much less a child.

God damn the Schindlers if they prevail in this.

28. They did find one neurologist who said she could be rehabilitated
He didn't say to what extent, and he is a known "pro-lifer".

People in an irrational state of mind don't need much of a straw to keep them grasping. I'm giving Terri's parents the benefit of the doubt.

19. This is all MADNESS
Clearly nobody would want to exist like this. What possible reason
could anyone give for forcing her to live. This is not life - it
is a living death.

Why would any parent do this to their child

21. Infant
In some strange/sick(?) way she has become their infant/baby again, no longer an adult child with a mind and will of her own.

Hate to say that, I think it is true.

23. Pressure mounts on senators to change their minds on Schiavo bill
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Sen. Larcenia Bullard was considering changing her vote to support a bill that could keep Terri Schiavo alive, but after being yelled at, insulted and even told to envision her own daughter in a coma - she changed her mind.

"At this point, they've turned me off," she said Tuesday of the protesters working to keep the brain-damaged woman alive, who Tuesday began distributing Western-style "wanted" posters targeting the nine Senate Republicans who voted against a measure aimed at Schiavo.

"I now question their motives," the Miami Democrat said. "I had to ask a question, 'Are you serving the same God that I serve?'"

Pressure from activists and Gov. Jeb Bush continued mounting as a federal judge declined to order the brain-damaged woman's tube reinserted, but Sen. Daniel Webster, who has led Senate efforts to keep Schiavo alive, said he has yet to convince a single lawmaker to change their vote on the issue.
