Rice Balks at Iranian Pipeline
By Cherian Thomas
Bloomberg

NEW DELHI, India -- The United States has "concerns" about plans for a pipeline to transport natural gas to India from Iran, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday.

"Our views concerning Iran are very well-known and we have communicated to the Indian government our concerns about gas pipeline cooperation between Iran and India," Rice told a news conference in New Delhi. "We need to look at the broader question of how India meets its energy needs in the next decade."

India wants to build the proposed 2,775-kilometer pipeline via Pakistan. It is investing in oil and gas fields in Iran to secure energy supplies because it depends on imports for 70 percent of its oil needs. Iran has the world's biggest reserves of gas after Russia.

<snip>

The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday reported that the United States may sell F-16 fighter jets to India and Pakistan, citing unidentified U.S. officials and other people with knowledge of the plan. Rice said she had discussed the issue with Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh and that there would be no announcement on the planes.

"We need to look at the broader question of how India meets its energy needs in the next decade."

Are they looking at how we meet OUR energy needs?

This is really sickening. Our own country is falling apart and we are going to have India wait for our approval about energy plans. Would like to see them tell her where to shove it. What a total jerk she is. ahoe much worse can it get? And this person is supposed to represent us?

5. Like India cares! Condi is the embarrassing delusional puppet who
is wandering around the world making a fool of herself because she has gotten her information on what is going on from sociopaths. Karl Rove must be beside himself laughing at what a fool the whole USA government is to him.

How embarrassing. Thank god she is no longer coming to Canada. Because we are building a gas pipeline to Asia too and I for one could not stand that much embarrassment if she started to scold us on who we can buy and sell stuff from.

Note to Rice: take Australia... it is much easier to defend and your get 3 armies for every roll of the dice.

26. Because We Need That Gas For GTL To Fuel SUV's
Edited on Thu Mar-17-05 08:19 AM by loindelrio
Freedom is about to go marching and reigning again.

Natural Gas To Liquids

GTL provides ultra-clean fuel that can dramatically improve air quality in the major metropolitan areas of the world. GTL technology uses syngas production and the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process to convert natural gas into liquid synthetic fuels.

. . .

GTL fuels can be used to run diesel engines, jet and natural gas turbines and also fuel cells.

. . .

The benefits of GTL technology are becoming very clear. GTL has the potential to convert the trillions of cubic feet of stranded natural gas worldwide into billions of barrels of economic value. Countries that control the gas will realize great value from the investment, jobs and revenue that will result from the development of these resources. Furthermore, the products and fuels from GTL plants can be transported and sold through conventional infrastructure, such as tankers, pipelines, storage facilities and existing retail distribution systems.

34. Fate of US $4b Iran-Pak-India Gas Pipeline Hangs in Doubt
Fate of US$4b Iran-Pak-India gas pipeline hangs in doubt

    By Rong Shoujun

ISLAMABAD, March 19 (Xinhuanet) -- The fate of the 4 billion US dollars trans-Pakistan gas pipeline, to energize India's power hungry industrial sector with Iranian gas, seems to hang in balance after increasing US pressure on the participating countries to abandon the project.

US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice in her talks with the Pakistani and Indian leaders during her visit early this week to the Asian countries did not mince words about the US concerns over the gas pipeline project.

"We've voiced our concerns to the Indian Government about the gas pipeline with Iran. It's not only with India. We've similarly talked to Japan about a gas project that they would have because the United States has sanctions on Iran for good reasons," Rice said.

Under a US law or the Iran and Libya Sanctions Act of 1996, George Bush can penalize any foreign firm that invests more than 20 million dollars in the energy sectors of either country.

Ahead of Rice’s visit, Pakistan Information Minister
Sheikh Rashid Ahmed suddenly admitted that Khan
supplied nuclear centrifuges to Iran. This was followed
reports quoting diplomats linked to the IAEA in Geneva
that Pakistan has agreed to send centrifuges parts
for examination, which was later denied by
Islamabad.

40. Talk about arrogance
It's interesting to note that Halliburton got away with doing business with Iraq when sanctions were in place against them. Wasn't CondiSleazy in the energy industry before joining this administration? I wouldn't be surprised if whatever company she was with (I think Texaco) did business with countries that were sanctioned.

Either way, she's a really obnoxious bitch, dictating to the world what they can and can't do.

I am curious though that India signed on to the deal though. After all, I would assume that a pipeline through Pakistan couldn't be very stable due to being a high profile terrorist target. Plus in certain times of hostility, I would assume that Pakistan could cut off the flow (though I'm sure Iran wouldn't be too pleased about that).

and Pakistan definitely needs money.

See that new nuke capable missile test
they did. They think thet can hit Israel w/ it.

And Pakistan has no disagreements w/ Iran.
AQ Khan comes to mind.

And about that no announcements on planes
statement:

ISLAMABAD, MARCH 17: Pakistan's expectations of
acquiring F-16 fighters failed to materialise during talks
between US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and
President Pervez Musharraf due to Washington’s concerns
over Islamabad’s close nuclear cooperation with
Iran.
