Raw Story Exclusive: Scandal surrounding lobbyist linked to DeLay ensnares two more Republican congressmen...

Abramoff hosted fundraisers for two congressmen who aided tribal clients

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

Two Republican congressmen who advocated for provisions favorable to a former lobbyist with long ties to House Majority Leader Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) held fundraisers sponsored by the lobbyist at the lobbyist’s own businesses, RAW STORY has learned.

Jack Abramoff, a former top Republican lobbyist and fundraiser who is now under federal investigation for dubious dealings with his Native American clients, hosted fundraisers with Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and then-Rep. David Vitter (R-LA) during the same period the congressmen pushed for action benefiting Abramoff’s client.

Abramoff hosted a $1,000-a-plate dinner led by Vitter for the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee while he was meeting with Abramoff’s attorneys in an eleventh hour maneuver to insert a provision worth tens of millions of dollars to the Native American tribe Abramoff was representing.

Attending the Sept. 9, 2003 function was Deputy Majority Whip Eric Cantor, the highest ranking appointed congressman in Congress, who three months earlier had signed a letter along with DeLay urging the Department of the Interior to back a move favoring Abramoff’s tribal client.

4. Oh, yeah! This ought to make those fundraisers
look like a 5-year-old's lemonade stand--pocket change compared to the mess Delay is in.

The shit's hittin' the fan, I just hope we can make it stick and make it stink!

5. The new La Senator (Vitter) is one of them -- wonder what would happen
if he had to resign. Since we originally had a Democratic senator from La, I wonder if he was forced out, if we'd gain a seat in the Senate.

I know, wishful thinking, but hey, if it helps get some balance back in the Senate....
