Protestors rally outside church holding AIDS seminar

OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) -- A group of protesters rallied outside a western Kentucky church in opposition to a seminar on prayer and AIDS.

About a dozen people gathered outside the Cedar Street Missionary Baptist Church in Owensboro on Sunday, where The Annual Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS took place. They carried signs that read "No mercy in hell," and "No civil rights for sodomites."

"You cannot help (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS) with medicine," argued the Rev. Jack Oliver, who led the protest outside. "You must stop sodomy."

Cedar Street's assistant pastor, Michael Hardy, invited Oliver and the protesters inside for Sunday's service. Oliver declined the invitation.

Inside the church, organizers passed out bulletins that included the following prayer. "We pray for unity, not only in the black church, Lord, but in all of your churches, that we may find a unified way to fight this disease of HIV/AIDS."

because the fastest growing group of new HIV cases is among black and Hispanic WOMEN whose partners are secretly doing drugs or have been infected during affairs.

This is becoming a womens' issue, especially in the black community. Too many women are getting sick from this thing. If their children are healthy, they run the risk of leaving them orphaned, their father too ill himself to participate in their care.

HIV is a heterosexual disease in most of the world. These antigay freak jobs should be rounded up and slapped silly until that information penetrates their rocklike and bigoted skulls.

everyone of those protesters were without sin, since they cast the first stone. I bet none of them ever told a lie, divorced a spouse, had sex out of wedlock. Besides, I knew an eight year old boy who died of aids who had nothing to do with what those nasty Christians said. Poor boy had a transfusion before they could test the blood supply.

I grew up near there on the north side of the border. Owensboro always scared me for those very reasons. "I don't want to get sucked in to your creepy cult!" I would expect that given it was a black church hosting the sermon that this "protest" group was not merely against gays. But that's just idle speculation; I'm not sure who this Jack Oliver is. On edit: I just saw the local rag photograph. Speculation ended.

It seems the "good" reverend could find a moral lesson about his own relgion if he would have attended the sermon.
