Actor Warren Beatty to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger: Raise taxes
Actor Warren Beatty to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger: Raise taxes

Saturday, March 12, 2005

(03-12) 16:54 PST Beverly Hills, Calif. (AP) --

Warren Beatty, an actor who has dabbled in politics across four decades, has some words of advice for fellow film star and now Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger should raise taxes on the California rich and "terminate" his fund-raising and dinners with "the brokers of Wall Street" and the "lobbyists of K Street," Beatty said.

Receiving a political award Friday night, the actor who played Sen. Jay Billington Bulworth in the 1998 movie, "Bulworth," said: "Arnold. Be the action hero I know you can be. Be strong. Stand up and confront the wealthiest 1 percent of Californians who have benefited $12 billion a year from the Bush tax cuts."

Beatty received the third annual Phillip Burton public service award Friday from the Santa Monica-based Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights for a lifetime of political work. Burton was a liberal San Francisco congressman who died in 1983.

1. Interesting. Beatty making a political statement

or challenge. Hmmm. Let's hear the rw wackos say that he should keep his opinion to himself because he's only a "hollywood actor."

I believe they've painted themselves into a corner on this one - not that that will stop them.

I'll be intersted to see how this plays out.

26. no, they never see the contradictions and ironies of their
statements so Hollywood stars who are liberal and speak out are only "actors" while Hollywood stars who are conservative and speak out are okay and "true-blue americans"

4. They are soul-less beings
Who lack any creativity or wonder of the unknown.

Hollywood scares them. They are pod people.

12. It's one of those movies that got panned cause it was
too honest.

What a great political comedy! 4 1/2 Stars, if you haven't seen it, it's worth your time.

28. True talking - I loved that movie!
Halle Berry was great in it too (she always is).

The movie shows what happens to heroes. Sigh...now I'm depressed.

8. I hope he does
He has nothing to lose. Arnold has already set a precedent for politically inexperienced Hollywood types to run for office. He has the sort of name recognition that will get him, umm, recognized. He may even win, and even if he doesn't he will chip away at Arnold's political prestige very visibly.

While the state Democratic Party has many politicians capable of being governor, sadly, the major media is so entranced with Arnold's celebrity aura that it will take another celebrity to bring him down.

If every woman who boffed him, votes for him, he's a shoe-in.

Oops, you said "boffed" not "groped". Sorry.

27. Ummm...
"Arnold has already set a precedent for politically inexperienced Hollywood types to run for office."

Actually that precedent was set by Ronald Regan.

9. What a novel idea...
"It's called the haves giving a little more to the have nots," he said. "Nobody likes taxes, but everybody likes a peaceful, compassionate, law-abiding, productive, protective society."

and all around cool guy, and he's certainly is better on the eyes than the Arnold.

Doesn't hurt that he's also a hip liberal. Annette Benning would make a lovely first lady.

30. You've got that right - I've been hooked...
ever since I first watched Splendor in the Grass. Bonnie and Clyde? Phew. The fact that he's intelligent, well-spoken, and on our side makes it all the better. I agree re Annette - she seems "real" and not Stepford-ish like the current Mrs. Governator.

11. Absolutely fabulous news, sweetie darlings!
Edited on Sun Mar-13-05 01:07 AM by rocknation
The best thing the people of California can do for Arnold is expose him for the incompetent, unqualified, muscle-brained puppet that he is. The simplest solution to California's financial woes is staring him right in the face, and he's demonizing nurses. Talk about being divorced from reality! Keep up the good work, California--you'll have him turned into the the white Al Sharpton in no time!

16. About Arnold - Just remember...
He spent half his work career posing in beauty contests (and he calls other guys "girlie-men, hah!) and the other half of his career in makeup and hair spray. Other real men did his stunts for him. Every freaking line he uttered was written by a Hollywood screenwriter though he took the credit: (Hasta la vista, Baby) and (I'll be back) brilliant dialogue written for a moron.

pretend for a living get to set policy?

18. Look, I wouldn't support some one like Beatty
if I didn't know he was a super smart guy, Beatty has been politically aware for a long time.

Beatty would be a gift to Californians, it sux that they have had to suffer under two aweful repub gov/actors. I want to see how great an intelligent, compassionate person like Beatty would do.

If you could provide a list of what occupations denote being a real person, it'd sure make things a lot easier. Thanks in advance.

22. He would be excoriated for his past. Arnold is immune.
Warren would have some "Dobie Gillis show workers for truth" formed by some scumbag.

"Warren was not in those scenes. he's a liar!"

25. Beatty has priors
for taking interesting roles with a political slant. Remember his portrayal of John Reed in "Reds"? And it would be kind of nice to see Annette Bening as the First Lady in "The American President" as a reality show ;)
