17-month-old grandson of Nicklaus dies

BY HANNAH SAMPSON

[email protected]

The 17-month-old grandson of golf legend Jack Nicklaus died Tuesday night after his nanny found him in the hot tub at his family's North Palm Beach home.

Doctors spent more than an hour trying to save the life of Jake Walter Nicklaus. He was pronounced dead at 6:31 p.m. at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokesman Paul Miller said that Jake, his 4-year-old brother Steve and their 25-year-old live-in nanny all went into the hot tub together earlier Tuesday.

When they went back inside, the baby barrier that surrounded the hot tub was not secured. A sliding glass door might also have been left open.

The nanny, whose name was not released, was dressing after getting out of the water and realized that Jake was not where he should be, Miller said. He did not think the boy had been gone for a long period of time.

''Unfortunately, the baby made his way into the Jacuzzi,'' he said. ``That's where she found the baby.''

4. Very Sad!
As a parent, my stomach just goes into a knot whenever I see a story like that and I'll be giving my son an extra hg when I pick him up from school today.

6. It definitely will make me keep a better eye
on my 20 month old. I'll never buy a house with a pool or hot tub.

8. 2 toddlers this week (in houston) drowned in family pools.
It happens in a instant.
YOU CANNOT TAKE YOUR EYES OFF CHILDREN when they're near water. PERIOD. It's life and death.

We have 2 gals who were 3 & 5 when we moved here & bought a house with a big inground pool. Bells/buzzers on the doors, combo lock on the gate, and a 5K automatic poolcover (an excellent investment) and we STILL never let them in the yard unsupervised 'til recently (they're 9 & 11 now.)
