US sounds alarm on human rights
Good piece in the Boston Globe.

I particularly like this quote from Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Michael Kozak (quite the title btw)

"The president's been very clear on the issue of torture, which is we are against it, and by torture, by anyone's common-sense definition of it, not some fancy definition."

Oh my no we can't have those hifalutin definitions getting in the way of righteous justice!

in Northern Ontario where Bush is just another 4-letter word

From the posted Article:

Sections of the report about Egypt, Libya, and Iran cite the following as torture: sleep deprivation, stripping and blindfolding, prolonged solitary confinement with sensory deprivation, long confinement in contorted positions -- known as ''stress and duress" techniques in the United States -- and the submerging of an individual in water.

''These are all techniques that were officially approved at various points that the Department of Justice has argued were not torture," said Tom Malinowski, a spokesman for Human Rights Watch.

In a statement released yesterday, Amnesty International criticized the US practice known as ''extraordinary rendition" -- the covert transfer of prisoners in US custody to countries where torture during interrogation is routine.

/snip/

''This administration is apparently dealing from both sides of the deck, condemning countries for their use of torture while simultaneously delivering detainees into their prison cells," Dr. William F. Schulz, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said yesterday.

Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Michael Kozak said yesterday that extraordinary rendition ''happens all the time,"

7. By my common-sense definition
we're torturing people. Who is the "anyone" whose "common sense definition" he's talking about? No one in this administration has any. These people are EVIL.
