Report: Nearly 50 more British soldiers may face charges on abuses in Iraq
07:59 PM EST Feb 26
LONDON (AP) - A British newspaper reported Sunday that secret military documents it has seen indicate that nearly 50 British servicemen could face prosecution for murder, assault and other crimes committed in Iraq.

The documents, which informed ministers about police investigations in the cases, indicate that the 50 servicemen include at least 12 British soldiers who face charges of murder, manslaughter or assault in Iraq, The Sunday Telegraph reported. That includes two cases in which Iraqi civilians were allegedly deliberately drowned by British soldiers, the paper said.

UK editor fired over hoax abuse pictures
Friday 14 May 2004, 22:52 Makka Time, 19:52 GMT

Piers Morgan was one of Britain's youngest newspaper editors.

The editor of Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper has been forced out for publishing pictures claiming to show the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by British troops that proved to be fake.

15/05/04

Piers Morgan was kicked out by the board of media group Trinity Mirror on Friday, which said it was "inappropriate" for him to continue as editor.

"There is now sufficient evidence to suggest that these pictures are fakes and that the Daily Mirror has been the subject of a calculated and malicious hoax," the paper said.

"The Daily Mirror therefore apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR (Queen's Lancashire Regiment) and the Army in Iraq," it said.

"The Board of Trinity Mirror has decided that it would be inappropriate for Piers Morgan to continue in his role as editor of the Daily Mirror and he will therefore be stepping down with immediate effect," added the newspaper.

The media group said it "published in good faith photographs which it absolutely believed were genuine images of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner" and would now "continue to cooperate fully with the investigation". Deputy editor Des Kelly will assume the role of acting editor.

All that training seems to do nothing for these pathetic insignificant bullies. Wonder how many times they'd have to change their trousers each day ... in a real war .... fighting real soldiers ?

2. If you do the numbers, and THIS many BRITISH
.
.
.

are found to be suspect, and some already convicted of abuse

I believe the American Abuse would be in larger numbers - no???

And get this - from the article:

"All were dismissed from the service "with disgrace." Under British law, they will probably serve half their sentences and then be released to parole.

In London, the head of the British army, Gen. Mike Jackson, apologized Friday night to the Iraqi people for the abuse by his soldiers, saying he was "appalled and disappointed" by photographs depicting abuse. "The incidents depicted are in direct contradiction of the core values and standards of the British army," Jackson said.

"Nevertheless, in the light of the evidence from this trial I do apologize on behalf of the army to those Iraqis who were abused and to the people of Iraq as a whole," he said. ?

Where's the USA's public admission, declaration and apologies?

5. And the Brits only have 10,000 or so troops there?
So how many hundreds or thousands of U.S. soldiers are guilty of the same crimes?

But golly jeepers, I guess even asking that question means I don't "support the troops.":puke:
