Registrar's Ouster Assailed
Fairfax Election Official's Dismissal Partisan, Republicans Say

By Lisa Rein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, February 19, 2005; Page B04

Fairfax County Republicans yesterday denounced as partisan the electoral board's firing of the county registrar as the three-member panel's two Democrats pledged to conduct a nationwide search for a professional election chief to replace her.

General Registrar Diane McIntyre's firing Thursday night capped months of criticism from her staff and the board's Democrats that she was ill-prepared, disorganized and short-staffed in her preparation for the November election, for which a record number of new voters registered.

McIntyre did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Although the election ran smoothly, board Democrats Larry E. Byrne and Margaret K. Luca called for an investigation this month into several balloting problems, including reports of felons voting illegally and absentee ballots being disqualified because they arrived after the election.

"You cannot end up in a situation where you have someone who is charged with maintaining the law violating the law and then being charged with the voters' trust," said Byrne, the board's vice president and McIntyre's most severe critic. "This was one of a whole series of things."

1. Phyrric victory....
she was fired for allowing 70 felons to vote in violation of State law, because she didn't have time to verify their status, according to the article. Apparently, all but 18 should have been allowed to vote.

The end result will be that more people will be disenfranchised improperly next time if there's not time to check their status.

It's a victory that a Republican was fired, but it sets a REALLY shitty precedent.

3.  "This was one of a whole series of things." ...important quote in article

I worked on the Northern Virginia voter registration drives...and this reTHUGlican registrar was a MAJOR impediment to getting new voters onto the voter rolls....she hindered every single application ILLEGALLY...many were never sent their requested absentee ballots, many were not ON the voter lists, despite applying MONTHS ahead of time...this registrar disenfrancised thousands of LEGAL VOTERS...

the 'felony' thing is a BIG DEAL to reTHUGlicans, and in this case, they CHOKED ON IT THEMSELVES...hahahaha.....

but, we're working on the felony vote too in Virginia...it needs to be all re-worked in the legislature, so those who served their time can VOTE and be productive citizens AGAIN.....that's a totally different issue, that will eventually get resolved here and in other racist SOUTHERN states....we KNOW the problem, and we are working to fix it....

for now, WE RELISH THE VICTORY....and a FAIR and honest Registrar will replace this dirty-trickster reTHUGlican....be PROUD...work in your OWN community to get rid of the 'katherine harris' and 'blackwell' type registrars...dirty reTHULICAN tricksters....

4. Remember you said that....
when it comes back to bite us in the ass later....

Female reproductive services providers thought "First Amendment zones" were a good thing when it came to the Operation Rescue folks...but then it came back to bite us all in the ass. This will, too.
