The Scandal That Keeps on Giving

By Dan Froomkin

The story of the phony White House reporter who called himself Jeff Gannon just gets curiouser and curiouser every day -- and shows no sign of abating.

Quite the contrary, in fact. After only occasionally burbling out of the realm of bloggers and media watchers over the past few weeks, the story exploded onto network television last night.

And after a few days in which the chatter was fixated on the salacious associations that bloggers uncovered between James D. Guckert (Gannon's real name) and gay escort Web sites, the focus is back on a serious public policy question: Why was a non-journalist asking slanted non-questions welcomed into the White House Briefing room?

Here's Brian Williams, introducing the story to about 10-million-plus people last night on the NBC Nightly News:
"It is the talk of Washington these days. It involves a man who was a regular in the White House press briefing room, he was free to ask President Bush and his press secretary on a regular basis. But it turns out he wasn't really a journalist and wasn't using his real name -- and there is more to his past that is making a lot of people wonder what he was doing in the White House in the first place."

20. like bugmenot extension better
I don't remember where i got it, but installed the "bugmenot" extension in both Firefox and Mozilla , now it's just a right click select "bugmenot" and it automatically fills in the name and password.

2. GOPers that "know the real facts" think this story has legs - or at
least imply they believe it will have legs.

God only knows who knows what - for real - these days.

And the old farts I hang with are no doubt as uninformed as I am!

:-(

I just hope it does have legs!

:-)

:toast:

6. If "Jeff" had had a 5 inch penis instead of an 8"er,
I doubt mainstream media would have gone for this story.

5. I've been posting in various places that this will fade away
Golly, maybe I was wrong! If I am, I will do a little dance of joy.

Not where anyone can see me, though. That would be embarrassing for me and painful for anyone watching. But it's the thought that counts.

7. Well, hopefully it'll segue into what's an even hotter hot potato -
Edited on Fri Feb-18-05 02:44 PM by calimary
This particular guy, with the racy past (that would have set off alarms were it anyone else) whose "credentials" were questionable enough for him to be denied a Congressional press pass, seems to be in some pretty advantageous places at some rawther advantageous times (like, why's he getting all these scoops, and from whom) and WITH that racy past (gay prostitute), AND his big ego - his penchant for Brag and Swagger - would he not be an ideal blackmail target in the eyes of those who seriously wish to do us harm? And would that or would that not constitute a near-criminal breach of national security (and during wartime, too, no less)? This guy might as well have been walking around wearing an electric sandwich board all over North Korea or some such place. I mean, Criminy! We were more at risk with a "Loose Gannon" like him than a single scuba diver in the Great Barrier Reef wearing a bleeding beef joint around his neck.

9. HEY MEDIA, FIND OUT HOW GANNON KNEW OF SHOCK AND AWE
BEFORE bush announced it to his "subjects"

Who was this guy cavorting with to have that kind of info and just as importantly who else was he blabbing to?

You know something just dawned on me...the MSM must know who Gannon was the *friend* of because the man is such an emboldened boastful IDIOT that I am sure he just couldn't keep his big mouth shut.

So come on MSM *journalists* which one of you has enough cajones to be the next history maker?

(I know why do I bother to even pose these questions lol)

11. It is still NOWHERE to where it should be.
The talking heads should be buzzing, and would be if this story was about a dem.
The gay issue matters a lot to me, but Im more afraid of being like Communist China. They at least are upfront about the fact that 'news' is being decided upon by their guv.

But we do have Jon Stewart, right?

17. Every time you read about this guy
don't you wonder just how huge this would be under a Clinton administration? Think of it. The rightwing hate-talkers would be popping blood vessels talking about Gannon. But, since it's a Bush administration, their talk has been markedly restrained.
Ah, the smell of hypocrisy in the morning. Smells like phoniness.
So much for their deep-rooted moral values and concern for security.
No press passes for Helen or Sarah or Maureen...they're just lifelong journalists.
But some guy with a driver's license, a fake name, and lots of nudie shots soliciting sex online gets total access.
This story completely highlights what total whores the rightwing media talkers are. Their convictions are as deeply held and true as their faux tans and smarmy smiles.

The CMC has been shown for what it is. Phony GOP Shills. A real Journalist would be diggin this story, no matter the party it affects, for the mere fact that it is "TRUTH" that must stand at the end.

It is plain that it's Dollars what motivates the CMC. High dolla ho's

19. Gannon/Gukert was just on Anderson Cooper
Gannon is now talking again - HE is keeping this going as well-the question is, what is the real agenda on this? why hasn't he been muzzled by the WH rover?
