Dean: NY GOP chairman must apologize or resign
Howard Dean, just four days into his job as Democratic National chairman, called Wednesday for New York's state Republican chairman to apologize or resign over remarks linking Democrats to a civil rights lawyer convicted of aiding terrorists.

Calling Stephen Minarik's comments "offensive," the former Vermont governor said, "The American people deserve better than this type of political character assassination."

2. This is what it is going to take
Don't let them attack your character, When they smear, call them out when it happens because if you don't the publics perception is permanently set and difficult to change later.
Call them out when it happens.

35. Not when, BEFORE
We need offense, not defense.

We should constantly be attacking their character.

Why? Because they are morally deficient.

123. You mean telling the truth not attacking their character
You are on to something. I know it's just a phrase but when the rep's attack a Dem's character they are lying or greatly exaggerating - we just need to tell the truth.

Sorry to be so picky but attacking their character has such a negative ring to it.

15. Absolutely --
When's the last time there was any public discussion and media coverage of WHO was running for the DNC chair, let alone the winner.

When's the last time you saw such excitement and enthusiasm among Dems, even those right here at DU, over the DNC chair slot? When's the last time you saw a lot of DUers (and other Dems) that hopeful, JUST on his election?

He's absolutely already been a welcome shot in the arm.

"Don't accuse the 5.5 million Democrats in this state of treason if you hope to win our votes," said Howard Wolfson, a Democratic consultant and top adviser to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. "And, if you make that mistake again, you best be prepared to make it to my face, because we love this country much too much to allow you to ever question our patriotism."

18. Lynne Stewart - WRONGLY CONVICTED!!
"Stewart is a New York City lawyer convicted last week of helping terrorists by smuggling messages from one of her imprisoned clients, a radical Egyptian sheik, to his terrorist disciples on the outside."

All she did was send out a press release for her client, at his request. THEY HAVE NOT SHOWN THAT THAT PRESS RELEASE CAUSED ANY VIOLENCE!!! She is appealing the verdict. You can lump me with her anytime.

21. So will any Republican back the NY Chairman?
Because, if they do, it has to be in the context of aggreeing with this statement. And that will allow us to continue to challenge their smears. Over 50% of Americans consider themselves Democrats....do they really want to pick a fight with 1/2 the American people?

Doubtful....these wimps will back down. All it takes is standing up and calling them on their smears, they only win when that bullshit goes unchallenged.

Dean and Wolfsen get it....and I hope this inspires more Democratic leadership to follow their lead on this. Questioning our patriotism and love of this country truely is the last refuge of scoundrals and criminals.

25. Yes, yes, YES!
Way to go, Howard! This is what we've needed all along. Now go after them on rhetoric. Before they can turn 'progressive' into a negative like they did with 'liberal' (and they're already trying) come back with 'regressive' every time they try to go back to their idealized 1950s (that never existed). Replace 'abortion rights' with 'reproductive rights' or 'pro-choice' both of which sound far less sinister (don't get me wrong; I fully support abortion rights but by defining it as such it sounds as though we only advocate abortion. We're talking about freedom to choose). We have let the GOP define the rhetoric for too long -- this is our perfect chance to change it. Go!

29. Stephen Minarik's comments were only the typical GUILT by ...
association tactics utilized by the "neo-con" clones. This Rovian nonsense should have been immediately responded to by the Kerry campaign at the "Swift Boat Dirty Tricks" attack. Dean MUST be careful! Extremely careful! The "forces of propaganda" are quite astute in their ability to "pair" nominatives in a negative manner to influence the listener. Unfortunately, the "corporate media" (CP) is not on the top of their game regarding the "fair and balanced report".

On the positive side!!

Good "bloody show" Governor!

53. Yes, newt garbage pulled this same shit during the Susan Smith
child-drowning story. Remember that? When it was finally found out that she did it, herself, to her two little boys, after sobbing on camera day in and day out about how she'd been the victim of some carjacking and her boys had been kidnapped?

Do you remember what gingrich said?

He said, paraphrasing only slightly - "this is what happens when you vote for the Democrats." A vile, steaming pile, he was, AND STILL IS. So this minarik schmuck is taking a page from his how-to-be-an-attack-ass book. Only difference here is - FINALLY - somebody's smacking 'em straight back in the face.

If you want them to stop this shit, you have to MAKE them stop.

77. While we're on the subject of Susan Smith...................
let's flesh out that story.
Not too much later - although I don’t recall the media pointing this out, Susan Smith’s stepfather publicly apologized to Susan, saying, “You don’t have all the guilt in this tragedy,” because he had molested her early on, then drew her into a full-blown sexual affair later. He knew she was already traumatized by her father’s suicide. As her stepfather, he should have been there FOR her, not there to USE her.
And just who was her stepfather, this man named Beverly Russell? He was a key operative in the South Carolina Republican Party and a Christian Coalition member. Susan testified that one morning after he had been out putting up campaign posters for Pat Robertson for president, he came into her bedroom and put her hand on his genitals and kissed her and fondled her. Later, he made her his full-time sex object.

'06 & '08 are looking very bright with his leadership.

66. This is what we've been waiting for from our DNC Chair!
His remarks were offensive and we do deserve better than this. The problem we face is that this will be the sort of slander that the pukes will throw at us from here on out and we've got to answer each and every charge or they stick.

Unfortunately, we're constantly labeled as coming down on the side of such 'activists' as Lynne Stewart. Just look at some of the comments made by fellow DU members in the threads about her conviction. Many did, and still do, question the government's case or the legitimacy of the conviction.

We've got a huge hill to climb, but I do believe that Howard Dean will help get us where we need to be.

He can say pretty much any damn thing he feels like without repercussions. He is just more than slightly pissed also so I expect to hear some real crybaby squeels from the Republicans. Won't work on Dean though. He has been through enough to know just how to give them the works and make news doing it. Every time he says these type things I donate a bit more. Every time Lieberman, Biden or Ford talk I fold my wallet back up.

80. Anyone catch Judy Woodruffs spin on CNN?controversy with Howard Dean?

quote from todays show. which i managed to watch 20 minutes of.

"In effect Minarik touched all of this off earlier this week when he said in electing Dean as national party chairman over the weekend that, quote: "The Democrats simply have refused to learn lessons of the last two election cycles. Now they can be called the party of Barbara Boxer, Lynn Stewart," who is a controversial civil rights attorney, "and Howard Dean." So there you have it. Already some controversy with Howard Dean."

I love how they can spin Minarik's idiotic statement into a problem with Dean. CNN needs to get out of the spin cycle.

154. The article doesn't question whether she's really guilty.....
.....of what she was accused, it just states that her conviction was unconstitutional in their opinion.

<<But if the federal government had followed the law, Ms. Stewart would never have been required to agree to these rules to begin with. Just after 9/11, Attorney General John Ashcroft gave himself the power to bypass the lawyer-client privilege, which every court in the United States has upheld, and eavesdrop on conversations between prisoners and their lawyers if he had reason to believe they were being used to "further facilitate acts of violence or terrorism." The regulation became effective immediately.>>

Did she indeed try to distract prison officials by speaking gibberish to her client so that he could pass messages to the interpreter? What were those messages? Why was there an effort to conceal them? Were they messages that could ultimately be used by terrorists on the outside to kill Americans?

I don't know the answers but a jury found her guilty on five felony counts. If she was tried on unconstitutional terms, she can appeal her conviction. In the interim, IMHO, siding with her only gives ammo to those who believe that we side with her kind. I don't believe we do, on average.

119. Yes....but
there are many things upsetting about the court's decision, the patriot act, etc, but first things first. Regime change first, then rewrite/discard the fascist laws, then free those incarcerated unjustly. Of course, we can protest the verdict etc during the interim, but still, we have to keep our eye on the ball.

121. Keep your eye on the ball
I agree that we need to keep our eye on the ball. You want to replace some career politicians with other career politicians? You want to keep the discourse about issues oversimplified, like in this case? The US Patriot Act is about to be renewed now in Congress. Why isn't Dean asking Bush to step down for suggesting the Patriot Act? Why isn't Dean asking for an appeal for Lynne Stewart, instead of adamantly opposing to support her?

I do not have blind faith in a top-down form of regime change. Having Centrists control the Dem party again will not change anything. With all the alternative media mobilization, we could in theory be all set to have a grass-roots movement, nominate and elect our own non-career politicians to Congress. Why is there so much opposition to this idea here at DU? Isn't that what our Democracy is supposed to be about? "We the people" are supposed to be the government?

149. Think on this.....
For many uninformed Americans watching MSM (let's face it, Indie media is hard to come by in that area between the coast and not everyone does computers-been there experienced that) the Patriot Act is a non issue as is Lynn Stewart, etc. In fact most things are a non issue until it hits home (witness the polls on Social Security). We need to get the dots connected before we colour the picture in for many Americans.
I will not blindly follow or excuse someone just because they are a Dem (or GOP for that matter). That being said though....the gov we have now is a highly dangerous fascist regime that managed to rig elections and pull the wool over everyones eyes. The Dems over all have had neither spine or cajones and forgot how to be the opposition, the media has been sleeping in the Lincoln bedroom, and the highest court in the land has it's collective noses up the Admin's *. We have to start somewhere and the White House is far easier to win than individual seats in Congress. We have to keep the pressure up. The WH is not a stopping place, just the beginning of a long process......

Thank you for being such a complete jerk by comparing democrats to terrorists. You should be congratulated for doing your utmost to elect Elliot Spitzer the next Governor of New York.

Anyone else wishing to express similar sentiments can send them to:

We deserve better than to be subjected to this type of political character assassination..and he should know from political assassination.

143. DEAN ROCKS
The biggest thing, IMHO, to take this nation back from the GOP hatemonger propogandists, is play their logical fallacies, hyper-outrage, false binaries and sensationalism right back at them. That means rapid response, that means standing up to them.

Shine the light on those fucking roaches, Dean.

148. 2/17 FOLLOWUP COMMENTS FROM MINARIK
Edited on Thu Feb-17-05 04:09 PM by jswordy
Minarik responded that it's not Republicans' problem that Democrats are tied to "far-left activists."
"This is the latest 'Dean Scream,'" Minarik said in a statement, referring to Dean's legendary yelp during presidential primaries last year.

153. Thanks for posting this.
I'm so excited about Dean and his new position that I want to hear about everything he says and does.

I don't recall that much excitement about Terry McAuliffe, or any other Chairman of the DNC.

Dean's a rock star, that's why! Whooooopeeeeeee.:bounce:
