Security Screener Fails to Spot Passenger's Butcher Knife - Newark Airport
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBHEX2O55E.html

A security screener at Newark Liberty International Airport failed to spot a butcher knife in a passenger's pocketbook and was removed from the post for retraining, officials said.

Katrina Bell, 27, had cleared security and was waiting with her sister to board a flight on Saturday morning when she discovered she was carrying a knife.

Bell had put the knife in her bag "just in case" before going on a blind date earlier that week, her sister and travel companion, Tikisha Bell Gowens, 30, said in The Sunday Star-Ledger of Newark.

"She said to me, 'Oh my God, I have this butcher knife in my pocketbook,'" Bell Gowens said. "My first thought was, 'They're going to think we're terrorists.'"

1. OMG! If the blind date was that frightening, she shouldn't
have gone on it.

Amazing isn't it..that the screeners miss this stuff? Makes me wonder what else they miss.

19. Yeah, women use to carry dimes (for phone calls) if a date went bad...
Now they carry butcher knives?

Amazing!

2. Just in case?
I case her blind date turned out to be Freddy Kruger?

WTF?

I think I'd stay home if I felt that unsafe about a date.

6. Bell had put the knife in her bag "just in case" before going on a blind..
The story does not say that the date was the result of a match from a dating service run by Lorenna Bobbett (sp?).

13. And yet they surrounded my daughter who had a safety pin....
Well, Ok, it was an industrial size, sharp, heavy safety pin that is used on laundry bags..she had it hooked on her book bag. We were about to go thru security, realized she had it, threw it in the trash can cuz we had no one to give it to, and immediately were approached and what felt like surrounded by at least 2 screeners who wanted to know want we just tossed in the trash can. They took it out, looked at it, and gave us an OK to take it on the plane. We were glad that she got to keep it, but at the same time it was kinda scary cuz held a certain way, it could have taken a few chunks out of someone's body!

16. I once thought I had removed all traces of metal from my person,
but a dime hidden in my back pocket made the detector go off, and then I had to have the wand waved over me for a good ten minutes.

and never have to go out on a blind date again, if this is the way things are these days.

Imagine her date's surprise if, during dinner, she had dropped her purse and the knife popped out. How did she figure to explain THAT?

18. I only fly once or twice a year now
But I'm amazed at the differences in airports. In Dec., in Fresno, because I refused to take my shoes off and walk around on the filthy airport floor, I was pulled out of line for special attention. They at least called in a female inspector (I'd been hearing some real horror stories), who wanded me all over, and then physically patted down my back. No interest in my front. I have some large-breasted friends who told me they've been totally felt up by male inspectors.
When I came back thru Louisville and Dallas, they didn't even look at me, or ask me to do anything extraordinary.
