Bush cuts hit Democratic states
Bush cuts hit Democratic states, analysis finds
By Susan Milligan, Globe Staff | February 12, 2005

WASHINGTON -- Massachusetts and other traditionally Democratic states would see their share of federal grant money shrink under President Bush's 2006 budget, compared to Republican states in the South and West, according to a Globe analysis of funding projections compiled by the White House budget office.

Critics and defenders of the president's $2.6 trillion budget say they do not believe the budget proposal represents a deliberate attack on states that voted for Democrat John F. Kerry, but rather that Bush's budget priorities tend to hurt those states that rely more on the health, community development, and housing programs that are targeted for reductions.

The result is that the highest percentage increases in state and local grant money would go to Arkansas, North Carolina, Arizona, and Missouri, while New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Hawaii, and Vermont would be among the states with the smallest increases. Massachusetts -- with a projected 1.9 percent increase -- is tied for 35th, while liberal-leaning California and Washington state (along with conservative-leaning North Dakota) would see a reduction in federal grants next year.

With the proposal to eliminate or reduce funding for home-heating assistance, the Northeast would be especially hard hit by the president's budget-cutting, said Senator Jon Corzine, Democrat of New Jersey.

1. Face it! Evil reigns in America and those who voted for this regime
will not escape being harmed by its policies. Who do you think will be moving to those states where help will be available? We are beginning to decay and decline from within. The fall of the Roman empire went the same way.

4. This needs MAGNIFICATION and lots of it..
Edited on Sat Feb-12-05 11:30 PM by SoCalDem
The states that are getting the most CUTS probably are some of the same states that already DONATE more by virtue of their large populations...

Even republicans in Blue states will feel the pinch.. I wonder if they like being left out:(

Those of us who did not vote for him "expected" to be treated like shit.. We know he's a vindictive little twit, but there are republicans living right next to us, and they are hurt too

5. What about the effect of the farm bill reductions?
Doesn't that affect mostly the red midwest?

7. Yes it does.
Big time. Farmers around here want more and more land to farm because that means they'll get bigger federal subsidy payments. Iowa, Nebraska and others will feel it.

6. I'm a critic of this budget and I *do* think it intentionally targets blue
states. Just like the GOP let Enron defraud California, Washington and Oregon.

8. Savannah River Ecology Lab funding cut.
Edited on Sun Feb-13-05 12:01 AM by CottonBear
This a University of Georgia Institite of Ecology research lab which is located at the SRP. They've just cut 7.5 million dollars. The lab researches the effects of nuclear waste on the environment. This is a devastating budget cut.
For those of you who don't know, the SRP = The Bomb Plant - as in nuclear bombs. The plant no longer produces bombs but still must dispose of all the waste.
edit: Without funding, the lab will shut in 2006. I live within a few hundred miles of SRP. We are being fucked over by the GOP.

12. Wasn't this obvious from the start? Of course most of what he would do
would be to hurt the 'blue' states...does this surprise anyone?
And of course his defenders would say it was not intentional. Big fat DUH!!
Remember the first item that was being discussed months ago was dropping the federal deduction for state and local taxes...and guess which states have the biggest state and local taxes? Well, to start with, NY and CA. The next ones sure aren't any of the RED states.
I can just see Cheney and Rove and Norquist laughing their heads off while coming up with all these great ideas of how to screw the blue states. They were probably rolling on the floor and laughing till they had tears in their eyes.
Did these guys have to spend a lot of time and money on this "analysis?

15. The HRSA & other cuts
will devistate rural communities -- but many won't know it for a while.

The elimination of the following will be very painful:

HRSA Tramua Care -- provides for tramau programs in underserved areas. Many people will die because w/o it there will be no tramau center within 100s of miles.

HRSA Rural Health -- Provides for subsidies for physicians and nurse practitioners to move to rural areas. Seeing how there are already a mass shortage of the above in rural areas, it won't help at all.

Rural Firefighting -- pays (through state grants) for rural volunteer fire equipment

they do not believe the budget proposal represents a deliberate attack on states that voted for Democrat John F. Kerry

This is clearly an administration that if one does not tow the line, they will put a hurt on you.
