Congressional Republicans struggle with Bush agenda, debt worries

BY JAMES KUHNHENN
Knight Ridder Newspapers
WASHINGTON -

(snip)

The numbers speak for themselves: 10-year cost projections are $2.2 trillion to overhaul Social Security, $724 billion for the Medicare drug benefit, $1.1 trillion to make tax cuts permanent, untold billions to secure Iraq and Afghanistan beyond this year.

(snip)

Asked to address her concerns with the president's budget, Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe cracked: "How long do you have?"

(snip)

"Here's the danger for the party: The $43 trillion unfunded liability is going to show up here soon," Graham said. "The party who'll suffer the most ... would be us," because Republicans are supposed to be the party of fiscal responsibility, he said.

(snip)

"Why not take the deficit argument off the table and do something we haven't done around here much: Pay for something," he asked.

1. The massive debt and defecit won't stop GOP members
from swallowing whatever Kool-Aid Bush serves them. With their stranglehold on the message and media they may in fact be totally unaccoutable at this point.

5. Remember Bush the Smarter?
AKA: Daddy

He got his wings clipped after a ridiculous spending package. This is going to be the downfall of Bush. He can't handle the money. And it will catch up. Even the rich can't support money-losing economies.

7. I'll believe it when I see it
they've gotten away with everything so far. It's all about propaganda and it seems too many just fall for it.

2. Hey Sen Graham... who has the budget writing powers?
Congress - where you were in the first two years of the budget explosion (from positive to massive deficits)
Senate - where you have been in the second two years of the budget explosions.

Take ownership of your own actions. Yes, your party will suffer the most when these chickens come home to roost - yours is the party that controlled everything, racked up the debts, and played "hey look over there - big crisis over behind that tree - vote for us" to divert attention from your policies that have the potential to collapse our national economy.

But hey - your # 2 guy said that deficits don't matter....

fiscal conservatives, dream on.
