Humane Society alert: "Canned Hunting" tonight on CSI
http://www.hsus.org/wildlife/stop_canned_hunts/index.html

Tomorrow night, America's #1 rated TV drama, CSI, will feature a storyline about one of the ugliest forms of animal cruelty, canned hunting. Canned hunting is the killing of a fenced-in animal who has no chance of escape, for the sole purpose of obtaining a trophy. That's right: animals -- often tame, exotic mammals -- are put into an enclosure for rich individuals to "hunt." It is as horrible as you can imagine.

Please keep this kicked!

Edited on Thu Feb-10-05 06:59 AM by leftchick
This is a big business in Texas and I am sure I remember him having someting to do with protecting the owners of these horrible places.

He and Cheney.....

Hail to the Chief

Cheney in region for a day of small-game hunting

By Rebekah Scott, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/03343/249105.stm he has himself flown over, in Air Force 2, on the taxpayer's tab, accompanied by his most favoritest shotgun, to the exclusive
Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, in rural Pennsylvania, to have himself a nice, cushy "canned" pheasant hunt

Because most rank-and-file hunters cannot afford hundreds of dollars per trophy, canned hunts have become the privileged playgrounds of the wealthy elite.
Doctors and lawyers trek from the suburbs for a weekend killing spree, and high-priced lobbyists entertain politicians on shooting preserves. Canned hunting preserves have begun to rival golf courses as favorite landscapes while wheeling and dealing.
President George Bush celebrated his victory after the 1988 election at the Lazy F Ranch near Beeville, Texas.
"These aren't animals, these are wild quail," he later responded to criticism. President Bush apparently never studied the Animal Kingdom, and has an odd definition of "wild" that includes captive birds who were hand-fed and raised in pens.

15. Bush loves trophy "hunting"
The Safari Club International named George W. Bush "Governor of the Year" in 1999 for his support of trophy hunting.

2. It's worse than that. These animals are often purchased from zoos and
petting zoos because of their advanced age and/or infirmity. They don't have a chance with or without a fence to try to escape. They are literally sitting ducks, so to speak.

The concept is to recreate the experience of safari like the expensive hunting trips in South Afrika these days. The canned hunt attracts a lot of Europeans.

5. Forget "canned" hunting - what about the "canned" Economy
Forget "canned" hunting - what about the "canned" Economy.

Where when the corporations need a big infusion of cash to take on China - they just hire someone to sell a SS crisis that cannot be fixed in any other way (canned crisis) - to the American Middle Class.

Big Corporate Men - mmmmmmmmmmm gotta get me some of that!! NOT

6. Real hunters would turn away from this in disgust
My husband is one. He mainly hunts for deer these days (hasn't gotten one for awhile), but he has shot antelope and caribou, in Canada.

One "positive" of the canned hunts is that it may keep some idiots away from actual hunters. Hubby was caribou-hunting in Canada -- they limit the take so that the herd is culled but the numbers aren't threatened. His group was waiting, out of sight, while a herd approached, and then suddenly one of them got up on a rock and started firing an automatic weapon. Spraying bullets everywhere. And he didn't hit a single 'bou.

:kick:

This is a disgusting practice. Nothing more "macho" than shooting at caged animals. I assume that one of the prizes must be penis enlargement surgery.

9. I remember the first time I heard of this practice
several years ago and I was absolutely horrified. There is nothing sportsman-like about this so-called sport. Man's inhumanity to man is bad enough, but what we have perpetrated on the creatures of this planet is staggering in it's cruelty.

I always tell myself that nothing the human race does surprised me anymore. Then we create some new atrocity and I find I'm left shaking my head again and again.

That's not hunting. It's just plain slaughter of an almost tame animal.

16. This makes me absolutely sick!
They shouldn't call it "Canned Hunting"...it should be called "Target Practice." These guys aren't hunting anything. What kind of person takes part in this fucked up activity? I would like to put them in a pen with a bunch of hungry lions and no way out. Now that sounds like a sport to me...

Fucking cowards.

19. I don't often become flame-bait here on these boards, but I
have a feeling that streak is about to end.

Personally, I would never take part the practice, and everyone who says it is not really "hunting" is correct. However, I don't think we should cast our personal moralities on the people that legally partake in this particular event.

Growing up on a farm in Missouri, I well know the dangers of allowing these rich bastards the luxury of hunting in the wild. It is downright dangerous. I prefer to think of the canned hunting expidetions as keeping the HUNTER confined to a small area.

The animal in question is bought and paid for. Much like cattle and pigs are bought by the tens of thousands every single day to be killed and butchered. An animal running loose in a real hunt can be wounded and left to suffer for days. You think Cheney would track an animal for a couple of miles to make sure it wasn't suffering?

The saving grace of these canned hunts is that the meat is often processed rather than left to rot on the ground, which is a far cry from what would happen if the same hunter didn't have a canned hunt available and shot your horse, cow, pig, or nephew while "really" hunting.

Hunting isn't illegal. Canned hunting is not illegal, at least in some places. Generally, I don't support the legislation of morality.
