U.S. campaign putting pressure on Canadian MPs over same-sex vote
OTTAWA - Some members of Parliament say they're getting pressure from their constituents, and from Americans, over the same-sex issue.

"They're phoning, they're sending e-mails and they're faxing," said Liberal MP Beth Phinney.

Liberal MP Maria Minna has found some of her U.S. correspondence harder to ignore. "One letter said that if I voted for it, I would burn in hell."

There's a postcard campaign, courtesy of an $80,000 contribution from the U.S. chapter of the Knights of Columbus, and the U.S.-based group, Focus on the Family, launched a series of ads promoting family values in the last Canadian election.

Where the hell is China when they are needed.

1. As if our reputation as a nation wasn't already slipping... now we'll
be known as a nation of militaristic, meddling prudes!

3. And Canada's laws are any of our business because....
....?

C'mon, someone...?

Anyone?

I just KNOW there's got to be a legitimate national interest here, right? Something logical to do with trade, or diplomacy, or defense, or illegal drug-smuggling, or immigration, or one of those other areas of public policy where one nation's actions has real, concrete impact on its neighbor...

....right?

So, someone clue me in, here, please.

I'm waiting....

bewilderedly,
Bright

9. It's Called
Right wing nuts. We have them here and they are using the same tactics that were used in the US to divide and conquer. They are a sub unit to the religious right down your way.
I only have to leave it to your imagination as to what would happen if they should become the government here.
We now have Fox News.

4. I can hear the ...
"Go fuck yourself, eh!" coming from up north. I'm sure our Canadian friends (like me and their enlightened southern neighbors) are sick and tired of Amurka telling people what to do. Attention, NeoCon freaks: NOT EVERY NATION WANTS TO BE A MODERN VERSION OF THE THIRD REICH.
THey are just quaking in their boots that one day people in this country might see the light and follow Canada's lead. In the meantime, they're busy attacking cartoon characters and passing anti-gay amendments to try and quash any momentum toward gay marriage.
I'm so tired of these people. Canada, stop them at the border now! Build a wall if you have to, we'll understand!

6. I can't think of a dumber strategy
than for an American to phone a Canadian and tell them how to vote!

If anyone was on the fence over this, that one phonecall alone will instantly change the MP to a yes vote.

7. I think this is serious.
The conservative movement in the U.S. is very organized and very determined, and I think they have every intention of spreading their bigotry and propaganda into Canada. The Canadians better figure out a way to put a stop to this NOW, or their going to have the same hateful diviseness infecting their culture.

11. I really hope you're right, VegasWolf.
And I think it's also a matter of how much of our rightwing and religious propaganda makes it's way into their airwaves.
