FBI Van Burglarized; SWAT Rifles, Ammo Taken

http://www.news4jax.com/news/4173456/detail.html

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Four sniper rifles, scopes and ammunition were stolen from an FBI SWAT van parked outside a Baymeadows Road hotel before dawn Sunday.

Four rifles similar to this were stolen from a locked FBI van parked parked outside a Jacksonville hotel before dawn Sunday. The FBI said the guns belonged to a team from Atlanta in Jacksonville to provide extra security for the Super Bowl.

A spokesman for the FBI said authorities are concerned these weapons are out on the street and are doing everything possible to try and find whoever took them.

Four high-powered rifles with scopes and 80 rounds of 308 ammunition were taken from the unmarked, locked van parked outside the Holiday Inn at Baymeadows and Interstate 95. An agent parked the van at 3:45 a.m. and discovered a few hours later the padlock cut and van burglarized

1. Padlock? For real?
What are the procedures? Bring them into the room?

No alarm system?

No fancy motion sensors?

Stupidity? Disregard for the taxpayer's money?

4. It was another 'failure of imagination"
Nobody ever dreamed that someone would use a boltcutters to steal the SWAT team's rifles...

10. I wouldn't worry too much about it
A SWAT sniper rifle is nothing more than a glorified bolt-action deer rifle. The difference is that SWAT sniper rifles are longer, heavier, and more cumbersome to haul around than a deer rifle, though they are more accurate at long range.

Just be glad they didn't find some fully-automatic MP5's, M4's or M16's back there; THAT would have been scary.

16. deer rifle
If I had too choose, I'd rather be shot with an MP5, M4, or M16 than be shot with a bolt-action deer rifle like those sniper rifles are. The .308 round they shoot has a lot more power than the .223 or 9mm of the "assault weapons."

Of course, none of them are likely to be used in a hold up. They're too unwieldy and hard to conceal. It is still troubling that the FBI was so lax. It's hardly a new problem, either. Didn't Dillinger steal weapons from Nat'l Guard armouries?

7. They gotta stop hiring recruits straight out of college
Sounds like they don't have one whit of goddamned common sense.

I always thought Quantico preferred a few years of real police work before they let you enroll? Apparently not...

6. It happened BEFORE and they didn't change any security procedures?
Edited on Tue Feb-08-05 04:22 PM by yellowcanine
These guys are supposed to be professionals and they get paid well. Is it too much to ask that they protect the public by securing their own weapons properly?
