Ex-exile protests US warning of fine, prison for staying in Cuba

ANITA SNOW

Associated Press

HAVANA - A Cuban who returned from exile 1 1/2 years ago and became a dissident protested on Monday a U.S. government letter warning him of a fine of up to $250,000 and up to 10 years in prison for staying so long.

Eloy Gutierrez-Menoyo, founder of the Miami-based opposition group Cambio Cubano, returned to Cuba for good in August 2003 with hopes of eventually opening a Cambio Cubano office here.

His legal immigration status in Cuba remains in limbo and he has been unable to open the office.

Gutierrez-Menoyo is a Cuban citizen but retains residency in the United States, where his wife and children live.

1. Gutierrez-Menoyo is a real dissident not on the Bushco payroll

He was at one time, but he finally caught on to the gig.. the Miamicubano virulently anti Castro industry (read: $$$$) needs Castro to remain. He is their platform for our tax dollars. He (Castro) is the platform for almost all S Fla politicians, from dog catcher to judge to congresscritter. It is they who need Castro, not Cubans in Cuba. They will do everything they can to continue the embargo/sanctions and the standoff w/Cuba and demonize Castro as long as they can.

2. You bet. I've heard before they have a "hate industry" going on there.
I've heard that their whole world revolves around the world they created when the originals had to flee from the revolution, many of that group being former politicians and Batista henchmen and wealthy landowners, like the Fanjul brothers, heirs of the enormous Mena-Gomez sugar plantations, now in South Florida and the Dominican Republic, where they continue to abuse workers. They are nasty people.

Thought you might get a kick from something I just found a short time ago on a search. There are some excerpts written about the Cuban "exiles" who were here in the 1960's, from a paper, "The Independent" from Homestead, Florida. Here's one:
THE INDEPENDENT
September 29 to October 5, 1966
Page 1

"WE DON'T NEED YOUR VIOLENCE"
AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR CUBAN EXILES

Two weeks ago, some of you marched against the Consul of the Bahamas in Downtown Miami and scuffled with the police, because you disagree with the policy of the Bahamas.

One week ago, one of your leaders, Felipe Rivero, admitted to reporters that the "bombing" of the Cuban embassy in Canada was fingered from here. He also expressed regret that "no one was killed" and told newsmen that this is only the beginning and that from now on "it may happen anywhere."

Unfortunately, we have gone through all this with some of you many times before. (When a local broadcaster dared to tell you that freedom will come to Cuba only if and when you unite, close ranks and go about the battle constructively, you picketed him and the station, threatened both and tried, in vain, to smear him as a Castro stooge and Communist.)

In the meantime, the Congress of the United States is now ready to make all of you citizens of this country, irrespective of our customary immigration laws.

It is another act of many that has enabled you to find here the kind of hospitality and understanding for your situation no other refugees have ever found. You were first, as exiles, to flee here without proper papers and be permitted to stay; you were first, as exiles, to get federal relief on a weekly basis; you were first, as exiles, to find a whole federal apparatus organized and ready to provide for you jobs, housing and even medical care.

By the way, here's what was written concerning Eloy Gutierrez-Menoyo at the same time:
IN CUBA

Fidel Castro claimed the capture of one of the more daring resistance fighters, Eloy Gutierrez Menoyo; he also claimed that Cuban rebels have been operating, with CIA help, from bases in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico; his principal U.N. diplomat took the charges to the U.N. Assembly.

Same source as the one immediately above:

I'm looking for more on the story I've heard that he was put in jail because he was discovered having participated in a plot to kill Fidel Castro. Isn't it remarkable, after getting out of jail, and living in Miami for all these years, he has decided to go back to Cuba to start his own political party?

I'm curious about what Bush is going to try to do to him.I'll bet no one thought Menoyo would have a thing to worry about from the U.S.! After all, he worked with the C.I.A. at one time.....
