US reports death threats to Americans in Bangladesh

Washington, July 14
The United States has received unverified death threats against US officials and citizens in Bangladesh and is warning Americans there to step up security precautions, the State Department said on Sunday.
In a notice released last week, the US embassy in Dhaka told Americans in Bangladesh that at least some of the threats were directed at people who live near the mission but stressed that it could not verify their credibility.
"The US embassy in Dhaka is receiving unconfirmed threats against US officials and other American citizens residing in Bangladesh," the embassy said in the July 5 notice, a copy of which was provided to AFP in Washington by the State Department.
"Some threats mention specific neighbourhoods near the US embassy," it said, without providing additional details.
A separate notice, issued on July 7 by State Department analysts who advise US multinational firms on security measures, used slightly different language in reporting the threats. (snip/...)
