Same-Sex Parents Upset PBS Won't Air Show

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Two Vermont same-sex couples whose families are featured in a PBS children's program are upset the network has decided not to distribute the show.

(snip)

"Many parents would not want their young children exposed to the lifestyles portrayed in the episode," Spellings wrote Tuesday to Pat Mitchell, the president and chief executive officer of PBS.

"I feel sick about it," Karen Pike of Hinesburg, said of the PBS decision. She and her partner, Gillian Pieper, and their three children are featured in the episode.

"I can't believe PBS would back down to this," she said. "I understand they get public funding, but they should be the one station we feel confident in, in knowing that what we see there represents our whole country."

1. This is disgraceful! In 100 years folks will think this country was nuts!
I'm sick and tired of gay folks like me being denied, ignored, and harassed for political / religious reasons!

We are who we are. Get the fuck over it!

3. Get mad because they are coming after you, big time!
I have never seen it like this. The attacks I have seen lately are brazen and often successful. I don't know why more Americans are not standing up against what is happening...I am really starting to worry.

2. Funny, I thought gays paid taxes just like everybody else
Or does the government refuse to use public revenue drawn from homosexuals?

7. Did you read the story in this thread? It is covering the response of
the families that were featured in the PBS program - I thought that it would be nice for everyone to hear what they had to say - if I would have put the story in the older thread, it would have been buried and a lot of people would miss out on hearing what these poor people have to say - the story in the Times was about Education Secretary Margaret Spellings problem with the show and PBS deciding not to run it. I am pretty cautious about running dupes...some stories however are bigger than just one thread, especially if there is a new completely different angle on the same topic.

6. I am deeply saddened by shit like this.
what kind of "family values" do these bigots espouse when its all based in hate?
I am so tired of these jerk offs hijacking my country ,my jesus.
If its not the cookie cutter example of what they feel is acceptable it must be destroyed. What kind of sick shit of a brain justifies that?
This is everyones fight.Straight, gay doesnt matter. If one person is being attacked this is a crime committed against everyone. We can not progress until everyone is included .Everyones voice should be added to the betterment of all.I cry for my gay brothers and sisters. They have been held up for ridicule by the rethuglicans. They have been used as objects of disdain. All for the purpose of securing power for a few.I wonder if the rethuglicans realize that to destroy one important loving part of our country is to destroy america. The people that stand back and do nothing on the gays behalf are just as guilty as the evil bastards that put anti- gay marriage on ballots.

9. I'm sorry PBS caved on this one.
I probably wouldn't watch the show anyway, and I must admit, I don't watch a whole lot of PBS. There are certain shows I really like like NOW, Frontline, and some of their specials, but I don't understand why the big fight over this particular show. It's not like PBS has millions of viewers! What's the big deal here?
