Daschle the Latest Democrat to Criticize Cheney-Halliburton Connection
Daschle the Latest Democrat to Criticize Cheney-Halliburton Connection
The Associated Press
Published: Sep 16, 2003

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle on Tuesday criticized Vice President Dick Cheney's former connection with Halliburton, a government contractor in Iraq.
On Friday the most persistent Halliburton critic in the House, Democratic Rep. Henry Waxman, fired another broadside at the company. The same day a Democratic presidential candidate, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, renewed criticism of the Bush administration's no-bid contracting for Iraq reconstruction.

Cheney was chief executive officer of the Houston company from 1995 through August 2000. The firm's KBR subsidiary is the main contractor working on restoration of Iraq's oil industry in an open-ended contract that keeps growing in value.

Waxman said the subsidiary has been given work orders worth $948 million for oil field work.

Daschle, D-S.D., said in his statement, "The Vice President needs to explain how he reconciles the claim that he has 'no financial interest in Halliburton of any kind' with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in deferred salary payments he receives from Halliburton. I hope he will clarify this discrepancy as soon as possible." (snip/...)

1. Should have used the Bush Administration approach
Just "imply" a relationship, do not assert there is one. Then you can have your cake and eat it too.

People forget that Cheney's only "real" private sector job was Halliburton. He was on the government dole his entire adult life otherwise. He had no skills to be a CEO of a major corporation, other than LOTS of connections...

4. Day late, dollar short. Mr. "Pink Tutu" should have been ....
screaming about this, and a hundred other things, consistently for the last 2+ years! No cigar from me Tom. You wait until some others have tested the water on this issue, and then you jump in. What, did you hear that the regime wants to blow off Cheney, and now you're falling in line, pretending to act like The Opposition?

7. Give the Daschle bashing a break
He happens to be from a conservative state, South Dakota. He's done the best he can given the plethora of dems in the senate that are repub lite. On issues that the dems are squarely behind him, he's in safer territory to attack the admin. anyways, he's not as bad as many here make him out to be...
