Lawmaker (R-ME) proposes scrapping same-day voter registration
Lawmaker proposes scrapping same-day voter registration

January 18, 2005

AUGUSTA, Maine -- A state lawmaker's proposal to scrap Maine's 32-year-old law that allows voters to register on Election Day could be a hard sell in a state where voter turnout is traditionally high, election officials said.

Sen. Jonathan Courtney, R-Sanford, said he submitted the bill because it would strengthen the integrity of the election process in the state by setting a voter-registration deadline about two days before each election.

Thanks for the heads-up, Davis_X_Machina, I'll contact both my state Rep. and State Sen. to voice my opposition!

I have a job interview in Rumford on Friday!

Nice to "meet" you, Garbo!

10. Talked regularly at one point...
...on 2m ham radio with a guy who was commuting Fryeburg-Bath every day. Given the distance, and the roads, he figured it was a case of when, not whether, he hit a moose...

Yours sounds equally thrilling...

6. No, but I will look......
......after all that has happened over the past several years, most people I have talked to seem to be a bit unmoved, as if they have been numb for awhile. Some just shake their heads and wonder what will happen next.

11. Meade is getting out of paper production...
...and becoming a packaging-only firm. Given the steady stream of layoffs at Rumford, I am very nervous about the future of that plant under new owners with a heavy debt burden. Happened in Brewer, happened in Millinocket.

Maine north of the Pike is in tough shape generally.

12. Boy, you said it.........
"Maine north of the Pike is in tough shape generally."

Ain't that the truth. I have a cabin near Millinocket. REALLY sad shape. Far worse than Rumford in my opinion.

13. Last textile mill here closed in '97 or so.
Last shoe factory, 2002 or thereabouts.

Still got a flourishing lumber mill, thanks be to God, but they can't hire everyone, and the tourist industry doesn't pay like the old jobs...

I used to pray for a cheap dollar to make our exports pay, now I pray for a cheap dollar so flatlanders can't afford to go to Europe.

4. Why is it always the pukes who want to keep people from voting?
These simply bogus claims to "strengthen the integrity of the election process" seem to me an attempt by the Republican party to suppress turnout. The pukes seem to attack "integrity" from the same angle in just about every state. In Wisconsin they keep crying that some huge Dem conspiracy brings thousands upon thousands of illegal voters to the polls every year. Yet they never can come up with any shred of evidence that more than a handful of people who voted shouldn't have.

Where is their concern for the votes actually getting counted? The real potential for fraud on a large scale is in the balloting machine and all they care about is whether a couple of people get to vote who maybe shouldn't.

I'm shocked, I say, shocked.

9. Thankfully, Maine has a law against BBV without a paper trail
We don't have any electronic voting machines - yet, at least that's the latest I heard. A good part of the state still votes with paper and pencil.

A House candidate who lost was crying after the election that college kids were voting absentee in their hometowns and then showing up on election day to vote in their college town. I'm sure this is part of the reasoning behind the filing of this bill.
