Thatcher 'in a third country' as he waits for a US visa to join wife
Sir Mark Thatcher, who left South Africa last week after pleading guilty to involvement in an African coup plot and paying a £300,000 fine, has gone to ground while seeking entry to the US.

"I can't tell you where he is, but it is not in Britain," Mark Worthington, a spokesman for the family, said yesterday. "He needs to sort out his visa for the US, and in the meantime he is in a third country."

Baroness Thatcher's son wants to join his American wife Diane, who is living with their two children in Texas, but the US embassy in London said British citizens with a felony conviction have to apply for a visa to enter the US, and "each application will be considered separately".

1. Thatcher wife and children fly to Texas 'for school term'

The family of Sir Mark Thatcher flew into, and out of, Britain this morning, en route to the United States where his children are expected to go to school.

Lady Diane Thatcher, her son Michael, 15, and daughter Amanda, 11, left Sir Mark, who is under house arrest in South Africa accused of bankrolling an alleged coup in oil-rich Equatorial Guinea. The family's flight from Cape Town landed at Heathrow at 6.10am and they emerged into the arrivals hall surrounded by police and airport staff around an hour and 20 minutes later.Wearing sunglasses, Lady Thatcher refused to comment on why she had left South Africa.

Lord Bell, a family spokesman, said that she had travelled straight from Heathrow to Gatwick for a connecting flight to Dallas. He added: "She's taking the children to the USA. The children are going to school there but then she will be going back to South Africa."

4. Mark Thatcher is Margaret Thatcher's son.
A South African news article from January 15th:

News 24: http://www.news24.com/News24/South_Africa/News/0,,2-7-1442_1646802,00.html

Interestingly, these articles are not using the name "Margaret Thatcher" in them.

From the International Herald Tribune on August 25, 2004:

Margaret Thatcher's 51 year old son was arrested at his home in South Africa today in connection with the attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea.
