Jerry Springer Gets Radio Talk Show
January 11, 2005
By Katy Bachman

Trash Talk TV host and Ohio Democrat Jerry Springer is headed for radio.

On Monday, Jan. 17, Springer will debut as host of a three-hour daily show (9 a.m. to Noon) on Clear Channel’s WSAI-AM in Cincinnati, which is changing formats from Oldies to Progressive Talk with new call letters WCKY.

Since last summer Clear Channel, which also syndicates many of the nation’s biggest conservative Talk show hosts, including Rush Limbaugh, has been rolling out Progressive Talk stations since late last summer. The company, which currently has about 20 Progressive Talk stations, is expected to syndicate Springer on about a dozen more stations.

Springer’s radio show will focus on his left-leaning politics, not his TV Talk show antics. “His radio program will not offer the Jerry you see on TV,” said Sean Compton, vp and national program coordinator for CC. “The one thing Jerry does understand is that entertaining is key to his success. He won’t dive in every day with a political agenda. He plans to have fun first.”

3. Thats great, hopefully I can find some way to listen to him
from up here in Bowling Green. Jerry's a great oarater and I have had the great pleasure of listening to him speak on several occasions. He is a very intelligent guy and I do hate it when people equate him with his "show" alone.

Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 03:06 PM by Connie_Corleone
His TV talk show in Cincinnati actually started out covering political and community issues.

And, of course, he was the mayor here.

10. WCKY
WCKY is an old call letter combo in Cincunnati. I think it comes from Covington, KY located across the river in northern Kentucky. I believe it used to be 1360 AM but someone from Cincy could confrim that.

They used to carry the Redlegs baseball games (yes, that is what they were nicknamed during the great commie scare in the 50's).

12. I used to listen to WCKY when I was a child and that was a
looooooooooooooong time ago. Almost 60 years ago. And it was country music then...back when the South was still voting for the DEMS!

I don't care for Springer the couple of times I tried to watch him on TV, but I'll love him if he can counteract the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh!

15. WCKY
Used to be 1560, but when WSAI changed formats, it took over WSAI's old slot at 1360. WCKY used to be talk-the more moderate end of the dial from 700 WLW, which went from oldies and general talk to more wingnut stuff. I'm looking forward to next Monday when we can hear some national liberal radio without going on the internet (Local Liberal Af-Am style is 1230 (the BUZZ)

Springer is the former Democratic mayor of Cincinnati, and a former TV anchor who quit for greener pastures. If you heard him before the show, you would have heard a passionate and sensible liberal voice. He stumped for Kerry around here, and has come back frequently to talk to local Dems.

Don't discount Springer. Star Power like his may be needed to turn Ohio at least partially blue in the future. He can certainly self-fund, and could readily get more money if he runs for Governor or Senator. While the show is an Achilles heel, he probably could get some distance from it in a couple of years or so if he goes full time commentator and turns it over to a charismatic substitute.

43. WCKY stands for Covington Kentucky (KY)
The station was originally based out of there. Covington is the third largest city in Kentucky, and is directly across the Ohio River from Cincinnati.

11. It's a setup
They will let him talk until he gets into areas that the GOP find uncomfortable. He is just their token liberal at this point in time.
It happened to Charles Goyette in Phoenix when he worked for Clear Channel and decided to voice about the war.

>>>>snip
Goyette’s resume includes stints with KTAR and recently several years as host of Clear Channel’s KFYI afternoon drive program. His differences with Clear Channel over his objections to the Iraq war spilled out into the public with the publication of an article by Goyette called “How to Lose Your Job in Talk Radio” in the American Conservative magazine a year ago. Since then Goyette has been sought out for his views on the war and the media by journalists and broadcasters across the country and around the world. He will be featured in an upcoming segment on the PBS show “NOW with Bill Moyers.”

Of course, when Clear Channel gave Stern the boot, 104.1 moved their obnoxious Monsters of The Mid-Day to be Monsters of the Morning & put obnoxious Conswervative Shannon Burke in the lunch time slot.

20. Gore's network will launch this year, but will not be a Liberal or
Progressive network. It's geared to young people.

http://indtv.net/index.html

Here's some of the planned programming:

• "That's F*&#ed Up: Is there something unfathomable going on around the corner or down the street? Some state of affairs that just doesn't make sense? You can rant all you want -- it just better be good TV."

• "INdTV Paparazzi: Get someone famous to opine on something substantive. ('Hey Paris -- what did you think of Rumsfeld's quote on the armored Humvee shortage in Iraq?') Or, ask a serious figure about something not-so-substantive. Note: Don't be a stalker."

• "Citizen Reporter: Pick a news story and tell it the way it should be told. No teleprompter, no static stand-ups, no local-news hair. Honesty and humor will go a long way. This is our chance to unwind the spin."

• "All-Nighter: What goes on in your town between 2 and 5 a.m.? We're looking for truly unique stuff, anywhere from the local late-night diner to the woods down by the creek."

21. Check out Springer's political blog, also This American Life
Jerry for Ohio

I really knew nothing about the guy myself except the nutty show, until I heard the program about him and his political background on This American Life. If you haven't heard it, it's really quite moving and interesting. They have some clips of him speaking to a bunch of political greybeards that are impressive as hell. The show is archived here.

25. You know I always thought he was a repug.....
I only watched his show for the trashyness of it. But I noticed that when people mention Bush they break out into cheers and stand attention. Yet when someone said they was a Dem, they would get booed. So I just sort of assumed they was right wingers.
Yet today, Springer himself made a joke about Ohio actually being a blue state, the crowd didn't get it so they played a crickets sound effect.
That made me think about his political stance....and low and behold comes this thread.

22. Why shouldn't we equate Springer with his show?
I can't understand the praise for Springer in this thread. His show highlighted the worst aspects of human behavior and is the kind of programming I hope will not exist in a future, slightly more enlightened world. Those types of shows pray on viewers facsination with the macabre - the reason why they are cynical money-makers. I don't care what his "politics" are - if he was responsible for that show, then he couldn't possibly speak for me and the type of world I am striving for.

I can't see this as anything other than bad news.

His show was nothing more than a forum for rich college kids to be entertained by humiliating the poor. I am willing to bet he will talk about "sticking up for the poor" on his show.

I guess he made a lot of money on the show, so what should he care

31. Exactly. And in so doing, he will be the essence of the stereotype
limousine liberal: a hypocrite. And I'm not saying he will be unjustly labelled. It will be true. The tragedy is that the sterotype will then be applied to all of us.

"Good for Jerry." You guys are sick. His show was cynical opportunism.

35. You Have A Point
What I fail to see is how all those "family values" Republicans never equate much of Fox's programming with the News network.

I mean, most of the shows on Fox aren't exactly wholesome. And yet, Conswervatives LOVE Rupert Murdoch.

It is hard for me to separate what type of show Springer had with the type of person he is. Will this really help us reach out to new voters?

On the other hand, is his show any worse than most of what is called "reality television"?

i hate his show, but when he talks politics, springer's great. he's articulate, yet a straight shooter. he simplifies issues with out dumbing them down. hope he does well

Jerry was an extremely popular and adept Mayor for Cincinnati. He is smart, knows how to fight and can more than hold his own with the Republican assholes.
Despite his "flaws" he has a way of winning people over. Cincinnati is a very conservative town, yet he had and still has a very loyal base here.
Is he the ideal politically correct democrat? NO, but after Kerry maybe it's time for a few more like Jerry.
