Kerry says Egypt-US relations key to Middle East conflicts
Kerry says Egypt-US relations key to Middle East conflicts

AP
Wednesday, January 12, 2005

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Former US presidential candidate John Kerry said yesterday strong American-Egyptian relations are crucial to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the war in Iraq.

The Democrat senator from Massachusetts met Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit in Cairo, his latest stop on a two-week Middle East tour that has seen him visit US troops in northern Iraq and witness Sunday's Palestinian elections won by Mahmoud Abbas.

"Egypt is very important to the next steps that have to be taken with respect to Israeli-Palestinian issues (and) with respect to Iraq," Kerry said after meeting Aboul Gheit.

"The whole region is going to be affected by the good relations between our countries."

Egypt is one of Washington's closest Mideast allies and a recipient of billions of dollars in US aid since becoming the first Arab state to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. But relations between Cairo and Tel Aviv remain cool.

1. A couple of nights ago the Daily Show had a clip of Kerry
commenting on the Palestinian/Middle East situation....he was so INCREDIBLY long-winded...obviously back to his "Senator-ese". Jon Stewart said he was out to "lose the Palestinian election, too." SO TRUE!!

2. this is why
Kerry should be president. Do you see * going anywhere abroad? nope. Do you see * trying to solve any conflicts in the middle-east? nope, he makes them.

gaah, such frustration.

4. Perhaps. But he sure conceded quickly!!!!
Edited on Wed Jan-12-05 02:57 PM by Julius Civitatus
He sure should be the president, as you say, but I'm very disappointed he quickly conceded the elections hours after he and Edwards promised they wouldn't do so until all the votes were counted. Then he let Nader and the Greens challenge the Ohio results, and conveniently travels to Iraq on the day he should have voted to support the election confirmation challenger by Barbara Boxer. He acted like he really didn't want to be president after all.

Mind you, I speak as a very disappointed supported who actually raised funds for his campaign. Very disappointed.
