Hundreds to be released from Guantanamo war on terror base: report
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20050110/wl_afp/usattacksguantanamo_050110172009

The United States is preparing to release or transfer hundreds of prisoners from its controversial Guantanamo Bay war on terror detention camp in Cuba, according to a newspaper report.

Quoting a senior US defence official, the Financial Times newspaper said the releases would be part of a restructuring of the camp which will include the building of a new prison for long-term inmates.

There are about 550 inmates from more than 20 countries at the camp on the US naval base, many of whom have been held for three years without access to a lawyer or being told whether they would be charged.

The report said the long term prison, to be called Camp Six, would have room for about 200 inmates that the United States does not want to see released.

2. No charges.
As long as they are not charged with anything they are guilty of something so they can be held until they die. Makes perfect logic for Fascists.

4. Huh?
What makes you think that 75% of these guys are rock farmers from Afghanistan? What relevance could they possibly have after being WAY out of the loop for 3 years?

5. Who are "These people" you are referring to?
Do you have their identities? Do you know who they are?

3. Watch HOW they are released. It is a cover up.
Their releases will not be announced, and they will be sent to whatever corner of the world that they were taken from--so that our media can't interview them and find out there never was a reason to hold them.

6. Hundreds released from Abu Ghraib.
Is this related? Winding down the "war on terror"? Or is this just a coincidence?

THE US military today announced the weekend release of about 230 prisoners from the Abu Ghraib prison, west of Baghdad, bringing the total freed so far this year to some 490.

7. I hope they get compensated.
They need to be paid for their time. 24 hours a day for the length of their imprisonment.

8. what does "transfer" involve? why do we need 200 more cells?

where will some be transferred?

will KBR Halliburton be awarded another contract to build new cells wherever that transfer destination is located?

so, the story is that of 550 inmates ... "hundreds" to leave Guantanamo ... but, we need another $25 million to build more long-term cells (for 200 inmates already there)?

what have the previous federal contracts built? how many concrete and steel cells exist?

limited research via google found articles citing amounts of:

$25 million
$37 million
$31 million
$9.7 million

now, another $25 million

Even though I hope Congressman Waxman is 'watching' these contract releases, I sent him the googled info cited in the thread below anyhoo ...

10. They have been labeled as
"enemy or unlawful combatants" under the legal definition provided by Alberto Gonzales. Those being held are not permitted the protection of the Geneva Conventions.

Anyone, even American citizens, the administration decides can be so labeled and held in detention.
