Lawmakers writing bill to limit giving to 527 groups (WV)
http://www.wvgazette.com/section/News/2005010928

Call it the anti-Don Blankenship bill.

A committee of legislators is drafting legislation to limit independent spending for or against a candidate, like the $2.4 million Massey Energy Co. CEO Blankenship gave to one group to help defeat state Supreme Court Justice Warren McGraw.

The draft bill would limit at $2,000 the contributions any one person could give to a group making an “electioneering communication” close to an election.

fantastic--hope other states and the feds adopt this

1. They'll find away around it,
like attacking a group rather than an individual. Then there is nothing that can be done without infringing on free speech.

2. Amusing, since Ohio raised the bribery limit to 10K
based on the lament that it was limiting "freedom of speech".

3. So unless you own a media outlet your mic is never worth more than $2,000.
The media enabling bill?

4. On face value, this would also seem to
limit the amount, for example, that a Soros could give to organizations like MoveOn (if were enacted at a federal level).
