Gunmen seize Iraqi officials on notorious road

TIKRIT, Iraq - Insurgents have abducted the head of the northern Salaheddin provincial council and the assistant to the provincial governor on a road south of Baghdad, police and tribal sources said on Saturday.

The men were seized on Friday as they travelled through the notorious “Triangle of Death” area south of Baghdad, on their way back to the town of Tikrit north of the capital, the sources said. The dean of the Tikrit law college was also taken.

Police said the men had been returning from the Shi’ite city of Najaf where they had been holding talks with Shi’ite officials to bridge divisions over Iraq’s Jan. 30 elections.

Scores of Iraqis have been captured and killed on roads in the area, most of them members of Iraq’s security forces or Shi’ites targeted by Sunni insurgents.

On edit: Rummy said if violence diminished after the election, US troops would be cut.

Right now the Bushies are anticipating an increase in violence before the election. What would make them believe that violence would diminish after the election? Has R & D developed a magic wand?
