Hagen wants Clinton to head NATO
One of Norway's most highly profiled and right-wing politicians, Carl I Hagen, is urging the nomination of former US President Bill Clinton as new NATO boss. Norwegian officials have given up hopes that their own defense minister, Kristin Krohn Devold, will get the job.

2. As much as I have enjoyed the past economy of the past administration,
I have been absolutely baffled at Clinton's support of *
over the Iraqi war.

This war was wrong and wrong for all the wrong reasons!

Does someone have a gun to Clinton's head????

If he does,I don't want Clinton to be a puppet to *.

The world will certainly go to pot!

4. I don't know if Clinton's public comments
really represented what he felt privately. Who knows?

5. Clinton Hedged a Bit
There's some sort of odd tradition -- and I don't altogether disagree with it -- that former presidents don't (openly) criticize their successors. Clinton hedged a bit (if you followed his remarks very carefully), but ultimately presidential tradition overpowered.

8. I no longer trust Bill, I hate to
say it, I loved him unconditionally for so long. My gut feeling is the last place he needs to be is the head of an international group such as NATO.

11. what is he going to say?
He decimated that country with sanctions over the same mythical "danger" that W invaded over. Half a million people died from cholera for lack of chlorine, I imagine I'd be in a deep state of denial myself.

7. Civilian head of NATO is always a European
At least, that's the way it's been up to now. And it's generally taken for granted that no American can be head of the UN, though I can see an exception being made for Clinton.

14. He would be good at that too
He was an internationalist, and even if he says he agreed with the Iraq war if he were still president he would have been able to build a coalition to deal with Saddam Hussein rather than going it alone and giving our allies the finger. I would imagine that anyone who served as president for 8 years would have relationships with a lot of foreign leaders and would be in a position to help mediate conflicts and work with the leaders of different countries very effectively.

There is a part of me that believes that if Clinton and Ehud Barak had each had 6 more months in office, things in the Middle East would be a lot different today.

15. Or better yet
does anybody give a poop?

I'm interested in whether Clinton will reenter public life in the future. Be interesting to see if he takes a cabinet post in a future Dem administration. State, etc.

13. If he is right-wing why does he want Clinton?
Or is the political spectrum in Norway so much further to the left that the "right wing" there is like the left wing here?

17. Yes right wing seems to mean different things in different countries-altho
right wing in Italy is definitely Mussolini fascist...in
Norway/Sweden right wing might mean what is our moderate
Democrat.

My 2 cents..yes, Bill for the UN. But he'd have to be
appointed to the UN by a President...and then I suppose the
members of the UN itself elect the president of the UN.

Bill is very much liked by world leaders, as seen by the standing
ovation he got at entering the UN by world leaders during his impeach
ment by the crazy republithugs.

And it would take someone of Bill's stature to repair the damage done
to America and the mistrust of America by the rest of the world. But
I'm not even sure that the world leaders would trust any American as
the head of the UN after what dumbo has done.
