4 Halliburton Workers Die in Iraq Attack
4 Halliburton Workers Die in Iraq Attack

HOUSTON - Halliburton Co. lost four employees in the attack at a military base in Iraq (news - web sites), but a report that three other workers had also been killed proved erroneous, the Houston-based contractor said Wednesday.

"We are thankful and hopeful to learn that three of our subcontractors, contrary to the first reports, survived yesterday's attack," Halliburton spokeswoman Wendy Hall said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "However, we are deeply saddened to confirm that the losses did include four Halliburton employees."

Sixteen other Halliburton workers, including 12 subcontractors, were injured seriously when explosions rocked a mess tent during lunchtime Tuesday at the base in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, company officials said.

1. Very sad...
...I suppose they will get improved security measures and armor to protect them. Wish we could get the same for our soldiers.

You'd think when Dick's own started dying that maybe the * Admin would start re-evaluating.

15. Armor
So are you in favor of armoring Halliburton employees? I thought we wanted them dead.

17. Nobody here wants anyone dead
but in a war zone, it goes with the territory, whether you're in combat fatigues or carrying around civilian ID. Haliburton shouldn't expect special treatment, just because its former CEO, who is still collecting Haliburton pay, is the VP.

22. No. I don't wish anyone dead
Just commenting that these folks will likely get more armor or improved security measures and our troops will get the "Army they have".

This is a terrible loss of life, as are any of the others who have died there. Yet this incident is more likely to effect changes than most of the others.

2. Really there were seven including the subcontractors
But the so called liberal media chose to limit the dead count to only those whose paychecks had Halliburton as the direct payor.

3. Interesting, CNN just told me that they weren't Halliburton employees
What I don't get is, these are adult civilians.. Why the delay in naming them?

5. Probably foreign nationals.
It's a chow hall, so these were probably the cooks and line servers that they hired at below US minimal wage from poor countries like the Philippenes, Guatamala, and Indonesia to cut costs for non-combat/unskilled jobs they're supposed to provide.

12. Exactly. The soldiers families will get a flag, and his insurance check..
...of approx. $200,000.00 dollars, if he opted to pay the higher premium for the better policy.

21. NOT the LNs (local nationals) or FN (foreign nationals)
That is why they are hired--they can buy them off with ten or twenty grand, it's way cheaper than a US employee, who wants a policy that is at least equivalent ($250K) to the military package in event of death.

The news reports are now speculating on the possibility of a suicide bomber rather than a mortar attack. That was my first thought, actually, when I heard about this.

They've got to be in overdrive at Ramstein...like they aren't already overburdened.

6. I wonder how many Halliburton and subsidiary employees
are in Iraq?

Our tax money is being spent to pay Halliburton which is buying extremely expensive special risk life insurance for these people, and paying them large salaries to risk their lives to do whatever it is they are doing, and paying 'guards' to try to keep them from being blown up.

What an amazing clusterfuck of a foreign policy we have. Beyond imagination.

8. work for Helliburton-see the world-maybe die-but get GOOD MONEY
The temptation!
No hope at home with the economy in a ditch-Bills to pay, families to support.
Temptation Lures needy workers to abandon their families and risk their lives.
It should be illegal to offer high pay to work in a war zone.
U.S. soldiers don't get high pay. And most of them are national guard or reserves and don't even want to be there at all.

How many people will now have the memory of Christmas as the time that "_" died when he/or she was in Iraq?

11. Does Halliburton hire minorities?

I don't recall them even focusing in that direction.

Are there any minority Generals in Iraq that are allowed to speak on TV?

Are there any minority reporters in Iraq that are allowed to speak to the media?

19. Haliburton hired out of Houston for awhile
until they started recruiting from army bases, perhaps because they hadn't filled their own quota.
